As liquid-ion battery (LIB) production soars, the demand for ultra-pure N-Methyl-pyrrolidone (NMP) – a critical solvent in cathode manufacturing – is higher than ever. Traditional recovery methods struggle to meet the rigorous purity standards due to metal contamination. That’s where Indaver steps in with an advanced purification process to achieve battery-grade NMP. In the #MEM4BAT project, Indaver and VITO are pioneering membrane tech like organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) to eliminate metal contaminants down to sub-ppb levels. With promising early results, this project is not only addressing the challenge of membrane stability in harsh solvents but paving the way for sustainable, efficient NMP recycling in the booming battery industry. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dX4fsscg TECNALIA Research & Innovation TECNALIA Membrane Technology Eindhoven University of Technology CNR-ITM VITO Fraunhofer IKTS Imperial College London Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon Universidad de Zaragoza Aston University University of Montpellier Twente membranes University of Twente EMI Twente BV NX Filtration RTWH Aachen NCSR "DEMOKRITOS" LiqTech POLYMEM SAS Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) FilaTech Group Rauschert Kloster Veilsdorf GmbH CiaoTech - Gruppo PNO PNO Innovation (Portugal) INNOVATION PLACE ENGIE H2SITE Me-Sep TECNALIA Ventures UNE - Asociación Española de Normalización European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) Susana XARÁ #membrane #membranetechnologies #nanomembrane
About us
INNOMEM aims at developing a sustainable OITB (Open Innovation Test Bed) to foster deployment and scale-up of innovative nano-enabled membranes and their derived products. Within the scope of INNOMEM, different types of membrane materials (polymeric, ceramic, metallic and nanocomposite), surface modification, membrane morphology and geometry and applications will be covered, providing for the first time a Single Entry Point (SEP) to provide the businesses in the sector with a one-stop-shop of the best available experts and technologies. European companies, mainly SMEs, will access through the SEP to develop, test and adopt, new high performance, multifunctional, safe and environmentally friendly nano-enabled membranes in a cost-effective and sustainable way while opening-up opportunities for demonstration of innovative nanomembranes in real life industrial problems (TRL7) and thus accelerating the market opening for these new products. INNOMEM gathers some of the most recognised Membrane departments (>20) in Europe and acknowledged facilitators of technology transfer, corporate finance, funding and coaching, making available (i) the most promising and breakthrough manufacturing pilots and (ii) advanced characterization techniques and modelling together with (iii) non-technical services through this Test Bed: while relevant improvement metrics can be defined, the potential network of reachable stakeholders counts thousands of businesses on an international scale. As a starting point, 14 Pilot Lines and their enabled technological services, coming from past investments at Regional (RIS3) at National and European levels, are deployed.

Despite the industry's shift toward eco-friendly technologies, membrane manufacturing still relies on toxic solvents like DMAC, DMF, and NMP, which harm the environment and are difficult to biodegrade. The European Union's classification of NMP as a high-concern substance has increased the urgency to find safer alternatives. Green solvents such as DMSO and Cyrene® show promise as replacements, but fully sustainable processes also require recycling these solvents to reduce pollution and costs, as membrane manufacturing generates wastewater filled with contaminants. The EcoSolventCycle project aims to improve sustainability by exploring the feasibility of recycling process water and separating solvents and polymeric additives from wastewater using membrane technology. This approach is more energy-efficient than traditional thermal separation methods, which consume 80% of industrial energy. Various membrane processes, including ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), pervaporation (PV), and membrane distillation (MD), will be studied. Initial results showed that UF membranes could remove over 99% of PVP from wastewater, and PV or MD could recycle over 90% of the process water with high NMP and glycerol rejection. Solvent extraction lead to more than 75% solvent recovery with a purity of 98.5%. An economic analysis indicated that MD-based processes significantly reduced costs compared to full distillation methods. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d-E_UQ3r TECNALIA Research & Innovation TECNALIA Membrane Technology Eindhoven University of Technology CNR-ITM VITO Fraunhofer IKTS Imperial College London Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon Universidad de Zaragoza Aston University University of Montpellier Twente membranes University of Twente EMI Twente BV NX Filtration RTWH Aachen NCSR "DEMOKRITOS" LiqTech POLYMEM SAS Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) FilaTech Group Rauschert Kloster Veilsdorf GmbH CiaoTech - Gruppo PNO PNO Innovation (Portugal) INNOVATION PLACE ENGIE H2SITE Me-Sep TECNALIA Ventures UNE - Asociación Española de Normalización European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) Susana XARÁ #membrane #membranetechnologies #nanomembrane

Milk whey, a valuable by-product of the dairy industry, has incredible nutritional properties, but traditional demineralization processes are becoming costly. In the Mem4SusDiary project, FrieslandCampina and VITO are tackling this by developing an innovative nanofiltration (NF) process using modified ceramic membranes. This new method pre-concentrates and partially demineralizes whey, reducing chemical consumption, wastewater, and production costs, all while boosting sustainability. By combining the robustness of ceramic membranes with the flexibility of polymeric ones, this breakthrough technology promises wide application potential across the food industry. Early trials have shown impressive results, and with the successful scaling-up of these membranes, the project is poised to revolutionize dairy processing and accelerate the use of membrane filtration across the sector. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dEekWddM TECNALIA Research & Innovation TECNALIA Membrane Technology Eindhoven University of Technology CNR-ITM VITO Fraunhofer IKTS Imperial College London Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon Universidad de Zaragoza Aston University University of Montpellier Twente membranes University of Twente EMI Twente BV NX Filtration RTWH Aachen NCSR "DEMOKRITOS" LiqTech POLYMEM SAS Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) FilaTech Group Rauschert Kloster Veilsdorf GmbH CiaoTech - Gruppo PNO PNO Innovation (Portugal) INNOVATION PLACE ENGIE H2SITE Me-Sep TECNALIA Ventures UNE - Asociación Española de Normalización European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) Susana XARÁ #membrane #membranetechnologies #nanomembrane
