What are the top metrics to track with a DEXA scan? Hint: It's not body fat!   While DEXA scans are often associated with measuring body fat, the real value actually lies in these three metrics:   VAT Mass (visceral fat): Unlike subcutaneous fat, visceral fat surrounds your organs and releases pro-inflammatory molecules, increasing your risk for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Aim for a VAT mass below the 10th percentile for your age and sex. Appendicular Lean Mass Index (muscle mass): Skeletal muscle is a metabolic powerhouse, essential for insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation, and mobility. Keeping ALMI in the top 25% for your age and sex significantly lowers your risk of sarcopenia (muscle loss) and metabolic dysfunction as you age. BMD Z-Score (bone density): Bone density starts to decline in your 30s, increasing the your risk of fractures and long-term complications. 🔬 New Findings on Lipoprotein(a) and Kidney Disease Risk 🔬 Recent research in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology highlights an important connection between high lipoprotein(a) levels and chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study involving over 108,000 participants shows that elevated lipoprotein(a) might play a direct role in kidney disease, in addition to its known cardiovascular risks.
