I’m excited to share that my first book, “Afterlives of the Plantation: Plotting Agrarian Futures in the Global Black South” will be published with Columbia University Press in May 2025. As a graduate student, I grew tired of biased depictions of the US South and Black southerners as culturally backward and intellectually unsophisticated. My book challenges these prevailing notions by reconsidering the Tuskegee Institute, an HBCU in the rural Jim Crow South, as a site of agricultural innovation and cultural and intellectual sophistication that influenced Black “freedom dreams” and strategies for self-determination throughout the Caribbean (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Jamaica, and Guyana) and the broader African diaspora. In February 2025, the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage will co-present InDigital, a biennial academic conference that examines developments in Indigenous media across the Americas. To date, it is the only conference of its kind in the United States. Taking place February 19 and 20 in Washington, D.C., InDigital V will bring together Indigenous media makers, media trainers, and diverse specialists in film/media studies, media/visual anthropology, and Indigenous studies.
