  • "[Jean and Chris] was taken on 2nd Avenue and 5th Street on a sunny day. I'd been living in this neighborhood since 1985. The image was taken in the 90s— I became really obsessed with going out with my Hasselblad and doing street portraits. It was a kind of self-starter project. Because I'm not from here, New York is endlessly fascinating to me. "I was just walking down the street, I'd gone out on my occasional walks and I just saw them, and I thought they were so beautiful. One of them had a BOY t-shirt on—I'm from London, there's a shop called BOY—I knew that t-shirt. We started talking. They obviously were best friends. They were so casual and so beautiful. And I got the picture, and that was that. And it seems that people really love the picture, years later. "This is the East Village, it's full of all sorts of people, even now. It was never hard for me to find people. That same day—on the contact sheet, you can see the other people. There's a handsome man with his little baby, there were two older ladies with their handbags, shots that became part of my street portrait collection. Twelve shots, on a roll. And I would take two, three shots of somebody—and that's it. And it was an incredible training. Because I was trained with film and every shot cost money, I feel like I'm a bit more careful." Janette Beckman's street photographs of New York City throughout the years show a changing and diverse urban landscape characterized by a multitude of coexisting cultures. Swipe to see more work, and some moments of magic ICP caught while walking around the LES recently with the photographer! Janette's work is on view We Are Here: Scenes from the Streets through Jan 6. • Beginning in the 1990s, fashion in Tokyo became characterized by bright colors and bold, often clashing patterns and prints. Known today as Harajuku style after the neighborhood where it was born, what was once a uniquely Japanese subcultural aesthetic has found international popularity, thanks in large part to Shoichi Aoki’s magazine FRUiTS. Aoki, a computer programmer-turned-street photographer, began documenting the trend on the streets of Tokyo at its height in the mid-1990s. FRUiTS quickly gained a cult following and spawned a book by the same name. See Shoichi Aoki's work in We are Here: Scenes from the Streets on view til January 6, 2025.
