A new study by IECA member Alison Anderson highlights the gaps in how climate change is taught in UK secondary schools. Based on surveys with over 1,000 students and 8,000 teachers, it reveals: • Climate education is often siloed in specific subjects, excluding many students. • Topics focus on impacts but rarely address solutions. • Teachers and students believe that sustainability should be embedded across the curriculum. The research calls for transformative approaches, emphasizing critical thinking, media literacy, and experiential learning to empower young people with the skills to face future challenges. What changes would you like to see in the way climate change is taught in schools?

Join us in celebrating this achievement! This milestone marks a turning point for the journal and the field of environmental communication, demonstrating how diverse perspectives can reframe global dialogues on sustainability and environmental challenges. Congratulations to our editor, Prof. Phaedra Pezzullo, the authors, and everyone involved. Inclusion is more than an aspiration—it’s a tangible and impactful force for change.
Environmental Communication (Journal) at International Environmental Communication Association (IECA)
GOOD NEWS: Prof. Pezzullo's editorship marks the first time in the journal's history in which we have editorial board leaders and members from Africa and the African Diaspora (shocking, really). The first Special Issue she accepted (other than her own on Care) was from two scholars who proposed an idea from a conference in South Africa, Mehita Iqani & Prof. Meghan Judge. In that Special Issue, which will be the first of the new year, an article has been published as a teaser that has proven (as if we needed numbers) that publishing research from Africa raises the bar for all: * The article has coverage around the world in 37 news outlets including specialist science and environmental news outlets Sciences et Avenir and Earth.com; and daily national titles like la Repubblica in Italy, and Der Tagesspiegel in Germany. * The news story was also featured on The Wildlife Society, an international network of over 11,000 leaders in wildlife science, management and conservation. * This media coverage has helped the article achieve the top 25 highest Altmetric attention (impact) score of all articles ever published in Environmental Communication, and is also the 10th highest impact score of all Taylor & Francis articles published in November 2024! Congratulations to all involved: @Gabriella Leighton & Laurel E.K. Serieys (2024). Wild Cats on the Internet: The Role of Social Media in Popularising Caracals in South Africa. International Environmental Communication Association (IECA) reposted this
We’re delighted to share a new social science study from Center for Climate Change Communication, George Mason University (4C) that captures the visitor transformations we observed at our last exhibition. Nicholas Badullovich, Ed Maibach, and John Botcher carried out a largely quantitative study of the impact of the show. Using baseline and follow-up surveys, they found that the exhibition increased the following metrics for visitors: determination and confidence to talk about climate, hope in our ability to achieve climate progress together, and understanding that more people are concerned about climate change than they previously thought. The article is currently under review for publication. Learn more and check out the preprint at the link in our bio! Photos: Sari Goodfriend https://lnkd.in/evvtX_HU
