Why You Should Follow Up After Your Internship Interview You nailed the interview, sent off a polished thank-you email, and now…you wait. Here’s the thing: waiting in silence may feel like the polite thing to do, but following up after an internship interview can actually give you a subtle advantage. Here’s why: 1. It Shows You’re Genuinely Interested Imagine hiring someone who never circles back after a conversation. Did they enjoy the interview? Are they actually excited about the role? Following up is a small but powerful way to show enthusiasm. It says, “I’m invested in this opportunity.” Employers notice candidates who are genuinely excited, so let them know you’re in it for real! 2. It Keeps You Top of Mind Think about it: hiring managers are juggling multiple candidates. A friendly, follow-up email helps you stand out from the crowd and keeps your name fresh in their memory. Especially if the hiring process is stretched over weeks, a quick check-in (done right) can help make sure you don’t slip through the cracks. 3. It Shows Professionalism Following up is more than a “just checking in” email. It’s an opportunity to show professionalism and commitment. A well-crafted message shows that you’re someone who understands the value of follow-through—a trait every team appreciates. 4. It Can Give You Valuable Feedback A good follow-up can sometimes lead to valuable insights. Maybe they’ll mention something about the timeline or additional details about the role. Even if you don’t get new information, you’ll demonstrate confidence and proactive communication, two qualities that can set you apart. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗨𝗽 (𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘂𝘀𝗵𝘆) Keep it brief, professional, and genuine. If it’s been a week since your interview, a simple message works wonders: “𝘏𝘪 [𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘕𝘢𝘮𝘦], 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 [𝘙𝘰𝘭𝘦] 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘐 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮. 𝘐’𝘮 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘫𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 [𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺] 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 [𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭].” The follow-up might seem like a small step, but in a competitive process, every detail counts. Show them you’re engaged, professional, and ready to contribute—before you’re even hired. 💻 Get more tips like this in our complete guide to securing a Tech internship 📝 Sign up for free at: https://lnkd.in/eK5wJeyp #InternshipPlaybook #TechInternship #SWEInternship #TechInternship2025 #SoftwareEngineering #StudentResources #TechCareers

A Day in the Life of a Software Engineering Intern: What to Expect Curious about a typical day for a software engineering intern? Here’s a breakdown of what interns can expect: 9:00 AM - Check-In & Morning Stand-Up The day usually begins with a stand-up meeting, where the team and interns share updates on current tasks, discuss any roadblocks, and set daily goals. These quick meetings keep everyone aligned and moving forward. 9:30 AM - Planning & Code Review After stand-up, interns review their tasks for the day and go over any code feedback from teammates. Code reviews are a regular part of the day and provide an excellent opportunity to learn best practices and improve coding skills. 10:30 AM - Heads-Down Coding This is the primary focus time for coding. Interns dive into building new features, fixing bugs, or researching solutions to challenges. They might work on smaller projects or contribute to larger features by completing sub-tasks assigned by the team. 12:00 PM - Lunch & Networking Lunch is a great time to connect with other interns and team members. Many companies organize lunch-and-learns or social events, making it easy for interns to network and learn about different roles in the organization. 1:00 PM - Afternoon Sync or Project Meeting In the afternoon, interns often join project meetings or sync-ups with their mentor. These meetings provide a chance to discuss project progress, address any challenges, and gain insight into how their work contributes to the bigger picture. 2:00 PM - Coding & Debugging Time The afternoon is spent focusing on coding tasks, implementing features, or debugging issues discovered during testing. Debugging can be challenging, but it's an essential skill that interns develop during their internship. 4:00 PM - Check-In with Mentor Most interns have a mentor who supports them throughout their project. This check-in is an opportunity to ask questions, receive feedback, and discuss progress on learning goals. 5:00 PM - Wrap-Up & Document Progress At the end of the day, interns document their work and note any blockers for the next stand-up. Reviewing any new feedback or updates on code helps them start fresh the following morning. A day as a software engineering intern is full of hands-on coding, collaboration, and learning opportunities. It’s a great way to gain industry experience, grow technical skills, and make valuable connections.

How to Choose the Right Tech Internship: Big Company vs. Startup Many students looking for tech internships think well-known, established companies are the only good option. For many people, though a scrappy startup with a small, ambitious team can be a fantastic place to learn. When setting your sights on a role, focus on three things: -------- 1. Learning Opportunities At big companies, the training is structured. There are mentors, onboarding sessions, and plenty of resources to help you grow. On the other hand, startups offer a different kind of learning. You’re given big responsibilities right away. There’s less structure — and that means a steep learning curve. -------- 2. Impact At the big company, you’d be part of a massive team working on established products. Even though your contributions might feel smaller, they’d impact millions of users. But at the startup? Your work would directly shape the product. You’d get to see your code go live faster, sometimes within days. -------- 3. Career Goals Thinking about your long-term goals will help. Big companies can be great for building a recognizable brand on your resume. It’s a name that often opens doors down the line. Startups, though, teach you how to build something from the ground up. If you want to start my own company someday, those skills would be invaluable. -------- If you’re debating between a big company and a startup, consider your goals. Each experience is unique, and only you know what you truly want to gain. In the end, it’s about choosing the path that excites you the most.
