My Prototyping Process: Learning from Real Conversations I’ve been using Prototype Thinking Lab’s framework to test how people interact with tools, especially in the context of LLM integrations. It’s been an interesting way to observe how expectations around technology—and productivity tools in particular—are evolving. Here’s the process: 1. Present the prototype. Encourage users to talk through their thoughts as they use it. 2. Ask pointed questions: • On a scale of 1-10, how valuable would this be if fully functional? • Why that rating? What would make it a 9 or 10? • How does this compare to your current status quo product? What stands out is how LLMs have shifted expectations. On one hand, they’ve raised the bar—people now expect tools to deliver intelligence, seamlessness, and even autonomy. On the other hand, these tools often fall short of their promise. For example: ChatGPT, while impressive, often gets a 5/10 in feedback. Users appreciate its potential but criticize it for generic responses, lack of memory, and limited actionability. This creates a new competitive standard. It’s not enough for tools to “work”—they need to integrate seamlessly, act autonomously, and adapt to the user’s context. If you’re working with LLMs or exploring how they can reshape workflows, I’d be curious to exchange notes. Credit to Jeff LaPorte for introducing me to this framework—it’s been invaluable for making sense of these shifts.
