Drunk driving is one of the deadliest yet most preventable behaviors – nearly one-third of the nation’s traffic deaths are due to impaired driving. In Iowa, drunk driving fatalities have increased 14% from 2019-2022.   Beginning January 1, 2025, Iowa joins 36 other states with a new law adding Compliance Based Removal (CBR) requirements to their state IID program. Under Iowa’s CBR law (SF 2261), drivers who are required to have an IID installed will have the interlock period extended should certain violations occur.   A 2023 research study conducted in partnership with Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) was critical to supporting the need for Iowa to strengthen its IID law. Compliance Based Removal requirements are an important tool to address drunk driving recidivism.   Thank you to Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa General Assembly for taking another important step to make Iowa’s roads safer!

Last night, MADD held a candlelight vigil on the National Mall in remembrance of the hundreds of thousands of lives lost to impaired driving.
