Congratulations to our friends at Nourish + Bloom, who celebrated the grand opening of their new autonomous grocery store in Cascade Heights! Invest Atlanta was proud to support this project through a grant from the Economic Opportunity Fund for Food Access. Nourish + Bloom represents what's possible when community vision meets city support: an accessible, high-tech market that meets immediate needs while setting a new standard for grocery stores everywhere. Together, we are making strides in ensuring that 85% of Atlantans are within a half mile of fresh, affordable food! #MovingAtlantaForward

Ché Houston has been baking and decorating desserts for almost 30 years. During that time, she’s also overcome addiction and housing insecurity. Through it all, she knew her potential and that she could one day help others. “I always wanted to open my own business and tried many times,” explains Ché, founder of Ché René Macarons & More, which features French Macarons with Southern finesse. “When I was finally able to legitimize my side hustle, I outgrew my home kitchen within six months.” That’s when Ché found PREP, a culinary accelerator platform that provides shared kitchen environments for food entrepreneurs, along with operational resources, consultation and other essential services like marketing, branding and networking. Doug Marranci, PREP founder and CEO, says one of the goals of PREP includes serving as a conduit to Invest Atlanta services for PREP members. “The team at Invest Atlanta is focused and connected and has so much to offer small businesses,” he says. “We showcase Invest Atlanta services in our community space at PREP ATL South so our members have access to every resource available.” “The team at PREP helped me maneuver my way through the food service industry and get my business rolling,” says Ché. “They also see me for who I am and what I’m trying to accomplish.” Read more at investatlanta.com/impact.

Invest Atlanta assisted Deshanae Benjamin in becoming a first-time homeowner while also helping her grandmother, Gail Abercrombie, remain in the home she’s lived in for more than 60 years. Deshanae is a social worker, and when it came time to purchase a home, Invest Atlanta proved to be just the resource she needed. With help from the Invest Atlanta Down Payment Assistance Program and Atlanta Housing Authority incentives, Deshanae was able to layer assistance to buy a new construction house in Southwest Atlanta near the Westside Beltline and Pittsburg Yards. While working with Invest Atlanta to buy her own home, Deshanae also learned about the Atlanta Heritage Owner-Occupied Rehab Program, which helps seniors on fixed incomes make essential home repairs. As part of the Owner-Occupied Rehab program, Gail received a new roof, a new hot water heater and a new porch – where she can often be found visiting with neighbors and passersby. Deshanae says she’s grateful for Invest Atlanta for not only supporting her own dream of homeownership, but also helping her grandmother remain in her community amid all the growth and new development. “She’s been there the longest and doesn’t want to feel pushed out,” says Deshanae. “Now her home ‘looks the part,’ and she feels like she still belongs.”

The Invest Atlanta Board took action on five items that will increase availability of healthy, affordable food and combat food insecurity. The $2.5M in new investment will provide grocery options to more than 11,000 residents living in low-income and low-access areas as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “A city of opportunity is one where all residents have access to fresh, affordable food in their communities,” said Mayor Andre Dickens. “The funding approved by the Invest Atlanta Board upholds this commitment and will help us foster strong, healthy neighborhoods throughout the city.” Funding for three of the projects comes from Invest Atlanta’s recently created Atlanta Food Access Catalyst Grant, part of a $6 million investment from the Atlanta City Council to bring more fresh food options to low-income and low-access neighborhoods. Invest Atlanta is proud to lead this initiative to reduce food insecurity in the city of Atlanta. #MovingAtlantaForward

October is a special month for Invest Atlanta. Yesterday, we celebrated 30 years of service for our Chief Operating Officer and Chief Atlanta Historian, Dawn Arnold! Those who know Dawn know a fiercely passionate, dedicated public servant, who is committed to the unending work of increasing equity for all Atlantans. Dawn started her career as an intern with the Urban Residential Finance Authority, before it became part of Invest Atlanta. Since then, she has grown with the organization, taking on and creating roles within Housing Finance before ascending to Chief Operating Officer. Dawn quite literally created the bond transaction processes still in place today. We would not be the organization we are today without her vision and dedication. Thank you to our superhero Dawn! #TeamIA #MovingAtlantaForward
