    Veterans Month Spotlight: From Marine Corps to President of ILS Financial, LLC As we continue our Veterans Month celebration, we would like to highlight Matt Samson, MBA, CPWA®, a Marine Corps veteran and President of ILS Financial, LLC, who now dedicates his career to serving the financial needs of military members and veterans. After leaving active duty in 2014 where he flew the F/A-18 Hornet, Matt was drawn to financial advising, realizing the need for expertise in military finances. “While working at my former firm, I was often asked about the unique aspects of military and veteran finances and after five years, I decided to open my own firm focused on helping people like me.” Today, he leads ILS Financial, LLC, specializing in guiding clients through the complex military retirement system, VA benefits, and other financial challenges familiar to those who’ve served. “The military retirement system, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the challenges of military life are extremely difficult to understand unless you've walked the same path. In my opinion, to best serve this community you need to have a solid foundation as an advisor as well as a specialized knowledge of military life and benefits.” He attributes his military experience to shaping his approach to financial advising. “Understanding strategic planning and the ability to turn a plan and vision into actions is critical to running a successful practice. As an aviator, standard operating procedure and checklists were pivotal to mission success and I've adopted this same mindset in working with clients.” Matt earned his CPWA designation after receiving a scholarship from the Investments & Wealth Institute (“the Institute”), enhancing his expertise to serve clients even better. “The CPWA designation was something that I identified early on in my career as an advisor as a goal. The quality of the institutions that the Institute partners with for the educational side of the designation is exemplary and the core knowledge, I felt was perfectly aligned with better serving my clients.” For fellow veterans considering wealth management, his advice: “Go for it! Make a conscious decision on who you want to serve as clients, it will shape everything else you do. It can be a long road to get to where you want to be, don't lose track of your vision or take shortcuts.     In a Rapidly Digitizing World, What Makes Clients Choose — and Stay With — a Human Advisor? In their recent Investments & Wealth Monitor article, “Human-Centric Advising: What Clients Value in Their Advisors,” authors Samantha Lamas and Danielle Labotka review evolving client preferences around hiring, retaining, or switching advisors. Delivering outstanding financial advice still means delivering specific financial services to clients, but also includes providing emotional reassurance and guidance. Clients want more than just numbers. They crave connection, understanding, and behavioral coaching. Specifically, the authors look at the advisor-client lifecycle — including situations where the advisor is let go — and document how trust and support are crucial in each stage. For example, emotional factors are often key to hiring decisions, while financial performance most strongly influences retention.
