Clinical leader in patient safety, enabling a standard of care for patient handoffs and closed-loop communication
About us
The I-PASS Patient Safety Institute is a clinical leader in patient safety, enabling a standard of care for patient handoffs and closed-loop communication. Founded by clinicians in 2016, the I-PASS Institute uses technology and digital tools to scale the I-PASS mnemonic. The I-PASS Institute’s solution, the I-PASS Bundle, consists of three core components—I-PASS Training, I-PASS Assessment and Improvement, and the I-PASS Written Handoff Tool. When all three platforms are used in unison, institutions are able to reduce patient harm caused by miscommunication. Currently implemented in more than 100 institutions, the organization’s clients span high-reliability organizations, from pediatrics and residency programs to nursing and transition of care with families.

👏 We’re excited to announce that Ephraim McDowell Health has joined as the fifth provider organization in the I-PASS Kentucky Hospital Association Transitions and Communication in Hospitals (KHATCH) Program. Originally set to be implemented in 9 hospitals within its first year, the I-PASS KHATCH Program has expanded to 25—nearly tripling its goal. With the addition of EMH’s three facilities, the program has already reached 32% of its eight-year target to improve care quality and patient safety across 60% of KHA members. Big news! Today, we’re pleased to announce that our own Marshall Burkhart is assuming the role of Interim CEO of the I-PASS Institute. We are incredibly grateful to William Floyd, whose visionary leadership has guided the I-PASS Patient Safety Institute since its founding in 2016. After eight years, Bill has decided to pass the mantle of leadership to Marshall, but we are pleased to announce that Bill will stay on as a board member to help during this transition period. We are grateful to Bill for his invaluable contributions to I-PASS, its partners, and the many institutions dedicated to improving clinical handoffs throughout healthcare. Since joining I-PASS in 2020, Marshall has demonstrated exceptional strategic vision, an unwavering passion for patient safety, and a deep commitment to transforming healthcare. His leadership has been instrumental in championing I-PASS's mission to reduce patient harm by elevating reliable handoff communication as a top priority – and strategic leverage point – for healthcare leaders nationwide. Please join us in thanking Bill for his tremendous leadership and in welcoming Marshall into his new role.
