The answer to global demand for more socially and environmentally responsible mining.

About us

The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) is a coalition of nongovernment organizations, mining companies, businesses purchasing minerals and metals for resale in other products, affected communities, and trade unions. IRMA's vision is that of a world in which the mining industry is respectful of the human rights and the aspirations of affected communities; provides safe, healthy and respectful workplaces; avoids or minimizes harm to the environment; and leaves positive legacies. Our mission is to establish a multi-stakeholder and independently-verified responsible mining assurance system that improves social and environmental performance and creates value for the mine sites which lead. The Standard for Responsible Mining launched in June 2018 is a precedent-setting global certification program for industrial-scale mine sites. With growing awareness and demand for ecologically and socially-responsible products jewelers, electronics businesses and others have sought assurances that the minerals they purchase are mined responsibly. The Standard for Responsible Mining’s best practice requirements for mining include elements such as health and safety for workers, human rights, community engagement, pollution control, mining in conflict-affected areas, rights of indigenous peoples, transparency in revenue payments from companies to governments, and land reclamation once mining is done.

  • 🌟 Reflecting on Connection and Collaboration: A Year-End Milestone 🌟 Last week, we had the privilege of hosting our year-end joint mining group call, bringing together mines from both the self-assessment phase and those undergoing third-party audits. It was a powerful reminder of what can happen when diverse perspectives come together to share insights, challenges, and best practices. This call was more than a meeting—it was a celebration of progress. 🌍 Mines at every stage of their journey toward responsible practices demonstrated that the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (#IRMA) isn’t just a framework—it's a tool to work towards more responsible mining practices. Participants openly discussed lessons learned, posed thought-provoking questions, and found common ground in their commitment to improving industry standards. It was inspiring to see how the shared goal of sustainable and equitable mining practices continues to drive collaboration and innovation. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this meaningful conversation. Your participation reaffirms that responsible mining is not only possible but also achievable when we support and learn from one another. As we look to the year ahead, we’re excited to build on this momentum, continuing to foster an inclusive and transparent dialogue for the betterment of our industry. Here’s to the collective impact we’ve made—and the milestones yet to come. 🚀 Interested in joining in 2025? • 🌏 A Week of Insights and Impactful Discussions on Responsible Mining 🌏 Last week, the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (#IRMA)  hosted two incredible events that showcased diverse perspectives and actionable ideas for responsible sourcing and remedy in mining. Here's a quick recap: ✅ Tuesday: Responsible Sourcing Across the Supply Chain We joined Anglo American, WindEurope and Business & Human Rights Resource Centre in a discussion moderated by Global Witness. The conversation emphasized the importance of collaboration and addressing knowledge gaps across sectors. A highlight was WindEurope’s fresh perspective on the renewable sector's journey, and Anglo American's call for cross-industry collaboration, especially noting the ResponsibleSteel initiative’s progress. ✅ Thursday: Remedy in Mining Roundtable This dynamic session co-hosted together with IPIS - International Peace Information Service explored the role of remedy through four targeted questions with input from a variety of voices, including labour, industry, academia, consultancies, human rights groups and Indigenous Peoples. Speakers shared powerful interventions, including a reflection on how  Compensation is worth nothing without #FPIC or the ability to sit as equals at the table. A special shoutout to the the actors from the private sector that joined this discussion, wanting to be at the forefront of the debate! These discussions reinforced the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration and putting community voices at the forefront of solutions. • 🌍 Resourcing Tomorrow with Responsible Mining Practices 🌍 At Resourcing Tomorrow IRMA's Deputy Director Rebecca Burton joined a powerful panel to discuss how the mining industry can embrace sustainability and transparency through frameworks like the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (#IRMA). Rebecca shared key insights into how Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)—who have been advocating for IRMA audits for over three years—are driving engagement across the mining sector. Their leadership demonstrates the growing demand for accountability, and Rebecca highlighted the untapped potential for other industries, particularly renewables, to step into this space and accelerate the market value of audits. She emphasized that IRMA's system, built by and for all six IRMA houses, is designed to benefit all stakeholders—from mining companies to local communities—by ensuring equal governance and inclusivity. Rebecca also spotlighted numerous real-world example of how IRMA's standard is fostering meaningful stakeholder engagement, remedy mechanisms, and alignment with emerging regulations. This underscores IRMA’s pivotal role in addressing critical issues like remedy and ensuring all voices are heard in decision-making processes. At IRMA, we believe in promoting more responsible mining practices wherever mining happens. Thank you to the fellow panelist from Anglo American, Albemarle Corporation, Rivian, Ørsted, #RMI and Drive Sustainability who helped make the conversation so impactful. ⭐Together, we can reshape mining for a more equitable and sustainable tomorrow. ⭐

Thank you to the team at IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance for two great training sessions on the #IRMA Assurance process. #ResponsibleMining is key to a green energy transition and is an absolute must when it comes to luxury items like jewelry. Luxury can't come at the cost of people at the source of our materials or the cost of detrimental impacts to the environment. What would it take to get the big gold mining companies engaging with IRMA? Gold is not hard to sell but it's just as important to mine it responsibly as it is with any other minerals.

  • 🌍 Key Takeaways from IRMA at the UN BHR Forum in Geneva 🌍 This year’s UN Business and Human Rights Forum was an important opportunity to reflect on the role of business in respecting and advancing human rights. Here are five critical insights IRMA is taking forward: 1️⃣ Indigenous-led solutions are transformative. When Indigenous Peoples lead, solutions are more durable and equitable. Initiatives like those highlighted in the Shared Prosperity Report by IPRI, Right Energy Partnership, and BHRRC showcase the power of #sharedprosperity to build lasting change. 2️⃣ Human rights violations. When businesses fail to respect human rights—especially the rights of #IndigenousPeoples—it creates conflict that is both avoidable and detrimental to all involved. 3️⃣ Trust starts with respecting #FPIC. For #mining and other industries, building trust with Indigenous Peoples begins with committing to their right to give or withhold Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (#FPIC). Anything less disrespects their sovereignty and risks project viability. 4️⃣ #ZeroTolerance for rights violations. Businesses cannot plead ignorance any longer. Clear actions are outlined by the Zero Tolerance Initiative. It’s time for companies to adopt and act on these principles to protect land and environmental #defenders. 5️⃣ Listen to human rights defenders. Action must be guided by those on the frontlines. Listening and responding to their voices is not just ethical—it’s essential for meaningful progress.
