  • Happy birthday to Jack Gardner, born #OnThisDay in 1837! 🎂 Isabella Stewart Gardner’s husband, Jack, was her cherished companion and partner in art collecting. Together, they shared a vision of creating a museum for the public. Although Jack passed away before Isabella realized this dream, his legacy lives on in over 130 objects Isabella lovingly displayed throughout the Museum’s galleries as “Jack’s objects.” His presence is especially felt in the Short Gallery, where his portrait by Antonio Mancini hangs next to Anders Zorn’s portrait of Isabella—both painted at the Palazzo Barbaro in their beloved Venice. 🔗 Learn more about Jack, Isabella's greatest supporter—and a collector in his own right—on our blog→ https://lnkd.in/e7PRd9QK _______ 🖼️: Antonio Mancini (Italian, 1852–1930), John Lowell Gardner, Jr., 1895. 🔎 #InsideTheCollection: The most important work of Islamic art in the Gardner's collection. Tucked away beneath the West Cloister staircase is an extraordinary stone cenotaph—a monument to someone buried elsewhere—from 15th-century Afghanistan. The complex, expertly carved designs on its surface likely originated in Persian “kitabkhanas” (book houses), where artisans first sketched and circulated patterns on paper, preparing them to be transformed into various materials—silk, wood, and here, a single piece of dark gray schist. Read this week's blog post to learn the history—then visit the Gardner Museum to see it yourself! https://lnkd.in/eDrYSq8X

  • What if your family secrets were immortalized in paint? The family of French painter Édouard Manet was complicated, even by today's standards. A stern patriarch who died of syphilis. An immigrant wife who was once a household employee. A stepson whose paternity remains a mystery. They were Manet's most frequent models, his staunch supporters, and the caretakers of his legacy. Discover their stories and a new perspective on the life and work of "the father of modernism." 🔗"Manet: a Model Family" is open now! → https://lnkd.in/eVv5bN3X
