About us
Volunteers of Issaquah Changing Education (VOICE) is a school-based program that pairs community volunteers with students who may benefit from a little extra help to succeed. The commitment involves meeting for 30 minutes to 1 hour a week throughout the school year on school premises during school hours. Because of the pandemic, VOICE lost several mentors at a time when the need is greater than ever. VOICE operates in all 26 schools in the district and serves students K-12. Pre-pandemic, VOICE served 465 students and still had wait lists at every school. The need is even bigger now, and we'd love your help. VOICE provides robust training and support throughout the year and is flexible with scheduling. For more information, please go to: https://www.issaquah.wednet.edu/academics/programs/voice Please contact voice@issaquah.wednet.edu or 425.837.7222 for more information. VOICE is certified as an Expert Partner with MENTOR National. It met nearly 100% of the criteria required for this designation. VOICE also recently became certified in Disability Inclusive Mentoring.

🚀 Beyond Grades: Why Mentorship is Key to Unlocking Students' Full Potential While academic success is important, social-emotional development is just as crucial for students’ overall well-being and long-term achievement. 🌱 As schools increasingly focus on social-emotional learning, mentorship has proven to be a powerful tool for growth in both areas. Mentorship doesn’t just improve grades—it helps students thrive socially and emotionally. According to research in School-Based Mentoring Programs by Amanda Bayer, Jean Baldwin Grossman, and David L. DuBois: 🔹 Mentorship improves attendance rates and academic performance—even when mentors don’t tutor. 🔹 Mentors, whether adults or older students, can have a significant positive impact on academic outcomes by building strong, supportive relationships. 🔹 Evidence shows that programs focusing on social activities and emotional well-being are just as effective—if not more—than those focused solely on academics. When mentorship focuses on social-emotional learning, students gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed academically and in life. 📚💡 Let’s invest in students’ hearts AND minds—because success isn’t just measured by grades! #MentorshipMatters #SocialEmotionalLearning #SupportYouth #SchoolBasedMentorship #EmotionalDevelopment #InvestInStudents #AcademicSuccess #VoiceProgram

🎯 Mentorship comes in many forms, and it’s all about context! Here’s a quick breakdown of the 3 main types of Context-Based Mentorship Programs: Community-Based 🌍 Connects mentors and mentees within a local community, aiming to support individuals outside traditional educational or corporate settings. Often focused on personal growth, social skills, or overcoming challenges, community-based mentorships help participants navigate life and career paths with guidance from local mentors. School-Based 📚 Takes place within educational institutions, supporting students in their academic, social, and personal development. Mentors, often teachers, alumni, or community members, provide guidance to students, helping them set goals, improve their skills, and explore career options. These programs aim to foster a supportive and nurturing environment within the school—like the VOICE program! Company-Based 💼 Employees are paired with more experienced colleagues or leaders within the organization. These programs focus on career development, leadership skills, and navigating the workplace. Company-based mentoring often provides valuable networking opportunities and professional growth, helping mentees progress in their careers. 🔍 VOICE is a school-based mentorship program that empowers students with confidence, social-emotional, and life skills. It’s different from community or company-based programs because it works directly within schools, guiding students in ways that support their social-emotional development, which indirectly impacts their education and future. #SchoolMentorship #StudentDevelopment #SocialEmotionalLearning #VOICEProgram #CompanyMentorship #CareerDevelopment #LeadershipSkills #ProfessionalGrowth #VOICE #MentorshipMatters #EmpoweringStudents #FutureLeaders #EducationMatters #SocialEmotionalDevelopment

🌟 A Tip for Building Resilience in Youth 🌟 According to the Search Institute, young people’s development is rooted in relationships and the most common factor in helping young people develop resilience is: having at least one stable, supportive relationship with an adult. 💡 This relationship provides the emotional support and encouragement needed to help youth overcome challenges, build self-confidence, and keep moving forward in the face of adversity. As mentors in the VOICE program, you are architects of resilience. By offering guidance, a listening ear, and a belief in their potential, you are making a lasting impact on the lives of the young people you mentor. Here are some ways resilience is built: ✅ Express Care – let mentees know they matter ✅ Provide Support – Help mentees complete tasks and achieve goals ✅ Expand Possibilities – Connect mentees to ideas, people and places that broaden their world ✅ Challenge Growth – Challenge mentees to learn and grow ✅ Share Power – Engage in an environment of respect, inclusion and collaboration As mentors, you’re helping your mentees check off all these boxes by providing that stable relationship that matters most. 🌱 🔑 Your support is the foundation they need to thrive - one session at a time. #MentorshipMatters #Resilience #YouthDevelopment #HopeInAction #VOICEProgram #SupportiveAdults #GrowthMindset

🌱 Mentoring relationships mirror the natural cycle of life 🌱 The journey of mentoring youth is dynamic, evolving through distinct stages that reflect growth, change, and connection. Get to know the stages that shape these powerful relationships! According to Gail Manza and Susan K. Patrick in their book The Mentor’s Field Guide, here are the six stages you might encounter: Introductory Stage 🤝 This initial phase is all about getting to know each other and building trust. Imagine Sarah, a new mentor, meeting her mentee, Alex, in the school library. They share their favorite subjects and discover a mutual love for science! Reliability in attending meetings and involving Alex in planning their time together sets a solid foundation for their relationship. Relationship-Building Stage 🌟 As trust deepens, focus on solidifying your bond. Picture Sarah and Alex working together on a science project during their meetings. Alex takes the lead in choosing the topic, which boosts his confidence and strengthens their connection. Growth Stage 🌱 This is where the real magic happens! Encourage your mentee's social, emotional, and cognitive development. When Alex expresses his worries about upcoming exams, Sarah listens and helps him create a study plan. If sensitive topics arise, remember to consult your program coordinator for support—it's all part of the journey! Maturation Stage 🌈 At this stage, you have a solid understanding of your mentee. Sarah and Alex start discussing his future aspirations—Alex dreams of becoming an engineer! They work together on setting achievable goals, like joining the school’s robotics club to explore his passion. Transition Stage 🚀 Changes are a natural part of life. Whether Alex is moving up to high school or adjusting to new classroom dynamics, transitions require careful navigation. When Alex faces new challenges in high school, Sarah helps him develop strategies to adapt, ensuring he feels supported during this important time. Closure 🌻 The final stage may arise due to various life circumstances. As Alex approaches his last year of high school, he feels a surge of confidence and realizes that he’s ready to enjoy this final chapter without the support of a mentor. After discussing his feelings with Sarah, he decides it’s time to close the mentorship relationship, feeling empowered to navigate his future on his own. While they may formally conclude their meetings, they both know that the bond they’ve built will last. ✨ Mentoring is a journey filled with rich experiences, challenges, and triumphs. Embrace each stage, and you’ll contribute to a meaningful and transformative experience for both you and your mentee! ✨ #mentoring #mentors #lifecycle #lifecycleofmentering #stageofmentoring #VOICEmentor #GailManza #SusanPatrick
