Discover the only National Laboratory located in low Earth orbit -- advancing science in space for life on Earth.
About us
In 2005, Congress designated the U.S. portion of the ISS as the nation’s newest national laboratory to maximize its use for improving quality of life on Earth, promoting collaboration among diverse users, and advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. This unique laboratory environment is now available for use by non-NASA U.S. government agencies, academic institutions, and the private sector, providing these customers access to a permanent microgravity setting, a powerful vantage point in low Earth orbit, and the extreme and varied environments of space. The ISS National Lab is managed by the Center for the Advancement for Science in Space, under agreement with NASA.

When you look out the window at work, what do you see? Before NASA Astronaut Tracy Dyson (right) left the #ISS to return to Earth, she joined fellow crew member Suni Williams in the "Window to the World" (aka the #cupola) as they orbited more than 260 miles over the #AtlanticOcean. What a breathtaking sight! 🤩 #WorkFam Image credit: NASA

International Space Station National Laboratory reposted this
On November 4th, we launched our 2nd materials growth experiment to the International Space Station National Laboratory! NASA's SpaceX CRS-31 mission, carrying over two dozen payloads with projects designed to benefit humanity and enable commerce in low-Earth orbit. The Stanford XLab's project, which aims to assess the effects of microgravity on the growth and properties of metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals, was among those aboard the Dragon spacecraft. This study, conducted in collaboration with researchers from University of California, Berkeley, uses Redwire Space’s ADvanced Space Experiment Processor (ADSEP) facility — a device that grows crystals, cultivates cells, and hosts live squid in space. NASA astronaut, Sunita Williams helped to perform the operation on the ISS, kicking off the experiment timeline. We are excited for its return! Stay tuned for our results! Many thanks to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and my fellow program PIs (Roya Maboudian, Carlo Carraro), as well as our collaborators from Stanford University (Zhou (Joe) Li, Owen Ryan, Zahra Nenna Heussen, Clint L.), UC Berkeley (Hyo Jun Min, Yaprak Ozbakir, Ph.D., Youngjun Kim), and Redwire Space (Rachel Ormsby, Ryan Bohl, Christopher Scherzer) for their support of this project. 🚀 The images below were captured from the Kennedy Space Center, the launch viewing area, and the ISS (via teleconferencing).
