Protecting America's woods, waters, soil, air and wildlife since 1922
About us
The Izaak Walton League was formed in 1922 to save outdoor America for future generations. The League is named after Izaak Walton, the 17th century author of The Compleat Angler, one of the first books about conservation and fishing. The League is one of the earliest organizations to set an aggressive course to defend wild America by changing public policy. Almost every major, successful conservation program in the U.S. can be traced directly to a League activity or initiative. Our work is guided entirely by grassroots volunteers. Throughout more than 260 communities, our chapters advance the mission of the Izaak Walton League – restoring watersheds, reducing air pollution, fighting litter, protecting wildlife habitat and open spaces, and instilling conservation ethics in outdoor recreationists. Members set policy through a democratic process that raises local issues to the state and national levels. The environment is everyone's issue. We believe that America needs smart solutions that are good for the environment and the economy at the same time. Relying on our unique blend of community-based conservation and common-sense advocacy, the League has made significant progress to protect and restore our nation's waters, promote clean energy, and advance sustainable agriculture.

In 2024, the Izaak Walton League celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first-born “Child of the League” – the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Championed by Will Dilg, the League’s first president, the Refuge saved 261 miles of the Mississippi River’s floodplain wetlands between Wabasha, Minnesota and the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. So, what about the next 100 years? If Will Dilg were alive today, what would he be rallying people for and railing against? How would he redefine the world as we know it? We are 103 years old today! And we are not slowing down. Since our last birthday, we hired new staff, opened new chapters, and engaged people all over the country in advancing our conservation mission. The threats to America's natural resources sure are different than they were in 1922... but we are ready to tackle the challenges of 2025. Here's to another year of defending outdoor America!

As demand for electricity soars and suppliers of renewable sources seek connections to consumers, the transmission system—the grid—is in trouble. We will need a combination of better transmission technology, grid capacity and energy storage to meet growing demand and integrate a greater share of renewable sources into a modern grid. As 2024 came to a close, Congress had an opportunity to pass a Farm Bill that would make a real difference for hunters, anglers, conservationists and, of course, farmers. Instead, Congress simply extended the same Farm Bill we already had - the one from 2018 - through three-quarters of 2025. We can and must do better. In this new year, the Izaak Walton League will continue fighting for positive change. Read more about the disappointing outcome: https://lnkd.in/eAXwBpAF

Good news: As a Christmas present, we got an op ed published in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Bad news: It's about Congress squandering a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in conservation on America's farms and ranches. Read about the disappointing ending to 2024: https://lnkd.in/e_PJdUVK It's a new year. In 2025, we'll keep fighting to defend America's soil, air, woods, waters and wildlife with common-sense policies that also benefit rural communities and our national economy.

During this period of mourning, we remember the legacy of President Jimmy Carter. Among his other accomplishments, in 1980 President Carter signed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, which set aside and protected more than 100 million acres of national parks, wildlife refuges and forests in Alaska – a staggering amount of public land, about the size of California. The Alaska Lands Act, as it is commonly called, was a tremendous gift for future generations and for the world.
