Yesterday, December 1st was annual #WorldAIDSDay. World AIDS Day serves as an important reminder that policymakers must remain committed to preventing new HIV infections and provide essential services to all people living with HIV. In the Department of Health Policy & Management, faculty members like Assistant Professor Emmanuel Drabo are committed to producing research that advances our understanding of HIV and HIV prevention methods, such as his study on the cost-effectiveness of behavioral approaches for HIV screening. Emmanuel's research is primarily designed to develop and apply methods to estimate the impact of health interventions and public health policy changes on morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases, and in doing so, he hopes to contribute to advance science around the valuation of interventions aimed at improving individual health outcomes and overall population health. Friday, November 8th was National First-Generation College Student Day, and The Johns Hopkins University hosted a number of events to celebrate its FLI (first-generation, limited-income) students! A critical issue for Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans is investigated in a study led by HPM Assistant Scientist Angela Liu. The study examines how Medigap—private supplemental insurance designed to cover out-of-pocket expenses not covered by Original Medicare—affects disenrollment rates from MA, particularly when beneficiaries encounter high-cost medical care. The research was published in Health Affairs Scholar and was co-authored by HPM Assistant Scientist Jianhui (Frank) Xu, HPM Professor Gerard Anderson, and National Association of ACOs Communications & Regulatory Affairs Director David Pittman.
