Visionary design elevating the ecological & social health of communities + providing innovative landscape stewardship
About us
Joanna Pertz Landscape Architecture (JPLA) is an award-winning woman-owned practice that brings together refined design and environmental expertise to create timeless landscapes that enrich the ecological and social health of our communities. JPLA has over 25 years of experience designing and building landscapes in New York City and beyond. Our clients include Architects, Developers, City Agencies, Healthcare Providers, Educational Institutions, and Non-profit Organizations. Our portfolio of work includes a range of scales and project types including multi-family, affordable and senior housing developments, playgrounds, schools, hospitals and healthcare campuses, waterfront parks, roof terraces, and private gardens. As a practice, JPLA fulfills a unique niche in providing both high-level landscape architectural design services and long-term horticultural support. This combination bridges design and operations which provides invaluable benefits to our clients’ projects, sustaining them and helping them grow over time. We are committed to placemaking and motivated by a passion for plants and the materials of landscape. We aim to create connections between people, nature, and place. Beyond the duration of each project, we aim to cultivate stewardship to ensure that our designed landscapes are mutually beneficial for plants, animals and people. JPLA brings to each project a facility with the tools of conceptual design, technical construction, innovative thinking, and attention to detail. Through a thoughtful design process, JPLA responds to the specific character of the adjacent buildings, the site’s micro-climate, and natural and cultural surroundings to develop an understanding of the project’s unique context. As a small practice, our methodology is lean and efficient, and our attention to communication and coordination ensures that projects stay on schedule and budget. Our top priority is to translate our client’s vision into a successful and sustainable design.

We are excited to see the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) PACT, Bethune Gardens landscape taking shape. The installation of a deep granular drainage base will support #permeablepavers. This drainage aggregate layer holds #stormwater for infiltration, allowing it to slowly absorb into the groundwater and filter out pollutants, thereby reducing runoff and the demands on our drainage systems. Less water in the storm drainage system means less polluted water flowing into our rivers. The stored water also makes for cooler pavement; the water evapo-transpires, reducing air temperatures and thus the urban #heatisland effect. As we close out #HeartMonth, here is a very interesting read from a former heart and lung surgeon, now serving chair of the global board of The Nature Conservancy. His takeaway: protecting nature is protecting our health. https://buff.ly/4161ONM #biodiversity #climatechange #sustainability

The transformation of this roof to an urban #rooftopgarden is sustainable landscaping at its finest. This #urbangarden at Green Wise headquarters in Japan is separated into two levels that are spread over the city line of Tokyo’s Tama district. Every project has its inspiration. For #NYCHA Audubon Houses in #WashingtonHeights, it was certainly birds! We looked to the eastern bluebird, New York's state bird to created a larger-than-life sculpture to live in the space! To begin, referencing pictures like the one below, Joanna sketched out a design. Stay tuned as we explore the steps it took to make an idea into a piece of public art. #landscapearchitecture #customsculpture #communityspace #placemaking

The renovation of this courtyard at Columbia University provides a peaceful refuge from the rigors of academic life. The design preserves the existing brick paving as a base for a new garden at the center of the Department of Computer Science. A continuous planter frames the courtyard’s central gathering space and reduces the occupiable open space to meet code. This planter forms a lush buffer between faculty offices and the courtyard’s gathering space made up of magnolia trees and a rich variety of evergreen and flowering shrubs and groundcovers. Niches tucked into the planting areas provide verdant nooks for sitting, studying, and quiet conversation. The central paved area is scattered with moveable tables and umbrellas that can be cleared to make way for department and campus events. #sustainabledesign #landscapedesign #JPLA CLIENT: Columbia University COLLABORATORS: Shakespeare Gordon Studios Vlado Architects (SGVA), now Shakespeare Gordon Studio

New Yorkers for Parks’ #DaffodilProject is the largest annual #volunteer effort in #NYC history, conceived as a living memorial to the victims of September 11. Since the Daffodil Project’s inception in 2002, over nine million daffodil #bulbs have been distributed for free, planted by thousands of volunteers in the fall, and celebrated as some of the first flowers to bloom come spring. #landscapearchitecturenyc
