Accelerating an electrified transportation system that is convenient, reliable, affordable, accessible, and equitable.
About us
The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation was created through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) to facilitate collaboration between the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Joint Office will align resources and expertise across the two departments toward leveraged outcomes. The office will be a critical component in the implementation of the BIL, providing support and expertise to a multitude of programs that seek to deploy a network of electric vehicle chargers, zero-emission fueling infrastructure, and zero-emission transit and school buses. The scope of the Joint Office will continue to evolve as directed by both departments.

Thanks to Idaho National Laboratory and the ChargeX Consortium for continuing to improve the EV charging experience! This new KPI implementation guide provides a clear framework for evaluating EV charging performance so drivers can count on getting a charge the first time, every time.
With assistance from INL’s experts, the ChargeX Consortium just released a new implementation guide outlining recommendations for electric vehicle (EV) charging to gauge a driver’s experience at public charging stations. This guide offers the EV industry a framework to measure and enhance the driver charging experience, ensuring reliability and efficiency. 🔋⚡ The hope is that these standardized metrics will provide industry practitioners with the data they need to identify problems and improve performance. They could also help industry improve relationships between charging networks, car makers and equipment manufacturers – and especially between charging networks and drivers. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e5FFEY5Z 🔗 https://inl.gov/chargex/ Argonne National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Joint Office of Energy and Transportation #ElectricVehicle #EV #EVs #EVcharging #research #ChargeX

The Joint Office is proud to support this work from Idaho National Laboratory to assist with accurate EV charging load forecasting for NEVI stations and beyond! ⚡ Learn more about the CalderaCast tool https://lnkd.in/e4x_i6us and even try it for yourself: https://lnkd.in/gyF4hzfk
Accurately forecasting how much power individual stations will demand from the electric grid is a major challenge facing the rapid expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging in the United States. 🔋⚡ While other electricity consumers, such as apartment buildings or factories, are known quantities that grid operators can plan for, the grid-load characteristics of EV charging stations remain less understood. This uncertainty can pose increased risk to grid operators, especially smaller utilities. To address this, Idaho National Laboratory (INL) researchers developed CalderaCast, a tool designed to aid potential funding applicants, local utilities, state agencies and other stakeholders plan and prepare for new EV charging stations. Funded by the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, CalderaCast is publicly available and free to use. It incorporates variables such as highway traffic volume along designated alternative fuel corridors, EV adoption rates and data on the charging characteristics of EVs to create probability functions for when charging is likely to occur. 🚗⚡New EV charging research 🚗⚡ EV charging just got smarter. New research from the ChargeX Consortium proposes a mechanism that could automatically prevent a charging session from ending during the charging initialization process—AKA “seamless retry.” For the #EV driver, this means less manual intervention while the EV charging equipment essentially does the unplugging and re-plugging work for you. 🙌 These recommendations are another step in the Joint Office’s effort to convene private and public sectors with research-backed approaches to improve the EV charging experience. The concept of “seamless retry” was initiated by the EV industry, which provided standards development, system engineering and testing. It was an honor to moderate a panel on land use last week at #TRBAM25!
How can land use and transportation policies shape the future of economies? At a panel session at today’s Transportation Research Board annual meeting, U.S. Department of Transportation leaders, including FTA Senior Advisor Catherine Teebay, explored this critical question by highlighting the importance of federal support for transit-oriented development and implementing efficient land use planning at the local level. These strategies strengthen transportation systems, drive economic growth and create opportunities nationwide for equitable housing, sustainable development, and improved quality of life. By fostering stronger community connections, improving accessibility for residents and businesses, and empowering local economies to thrive, we can lay a solid foundation for long-term prosperity.
