Design. At Your Service.
About us
Design • At Your Service Many architecture firms talk about “balancing” design and service, as if they are walking a tightrope where one wrong move puts the whole program at risk of freefall. We see it differently. The best architecture is not binary; there is no need to choose between beauty and service, between what the client needs and the designer wants, or vice-versa. At Jones, service and design are symbiotic, each feeding the other in an exercise of synthesis where it becomes impossible to know when design begins and service ends — and vice-versa. Our process starts by asking, then listening; it deepens with research and response, advances with more probing and integration, and culminates in a union of ideas, needs and aspirations. In this way, service and design are intertwined such that a durable and quiet beauty emerges. BRIGHT MOMENTS There’s no point in solving a problem until you understand why it exists. We find beauty somewhere in the problem and do something special that improves the human condition. That’s a bright moment. That’s design. Jones Architecture unites design and service in a celebration of people and place — on campuses, in the office, at home and in many spaces between. Specialties include learning environments, academic libraries, workplaces and any type of project that involves the intricacies and delicacies associated with a wide-ranging stakeholder group. We are committed to design that avoids flash in favor of contextual sophistication, achieved through meticulous study and impeccable execution. We believe in the power of collaboration across disciplines and seek opportunities to work in new and inventive ways at every scale. Is your project next? We’re excited to hear more about your architectural needs.

Happy Back to the Future Day! (For real, October 21, 2015 is the day that Doc and Marty travel to at the end of the movie). In keeping with the theme of time travel, our latest Jones Thinks examines the concept of Stewardship and responds to the question: How do we design for the next 100 years? "The Future Is What You Make It, So Make it A Good One..." - Doc Brown Link through below!

For a #tbt this month, we look back to 2018 at a student lounge space for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at MIT in building 1. We really focused on stripping back a lot of the existing finishes and exposing the generous volume of the space and celebrating these amazing windows facing Mass Ave. Flexible furniture systems (and a variety of furniture types), operable wall systems, robust AV-IT, whiteboards, and kitchenette/amenity spaces allow for collaborations, quiet study, presentations, panel discussions, and special events. These kind of open and flexible spaces that can wear many hats for our higher education clients are invaluable. @jonesarch #design #designatyourservice #studentlife #lounge #studentlounge #collaboration #quietstudy

In our #ontheboards post this morning, we are sharing a few images of the Norwich University Cyber Fusion Center. This will be a best-in-class resource for central Vermont and New England to cultivate research and innovation in cyberdefense. Bringing together academia, industry, and government agencies in a series of lab, simulation, and conference and event spaces, this project builds on the successes of Mack Hall, completed in 2019. We are proud to partner again with Freeman French Freeman, Rist Frost Shumway, Crowley Cottrell, and Engelberth Construction, among others, to deliver this resource to the University! @jonesarch #design #designatyourservice #cyber #cyberdefense #research #researchlabs

Jones Architecture is pleased to share this announcement from the Boston Society of Architects' Ethics Committee: Join us for a special edition of Tuesday Talks - In this engaging lecture and workshop, the committee members will share insights into their professional backgrounds, discuss what inspired them to get involved with the BSA, and highlight the importance of ethics in architectural practice today. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the AIA Code of Ethics and explore its relevance for both seasoned professionals and students. Whether you're just beginning your career or looking to expand your knowledge, this event offers valuable perspectives on the role of ethics in modern architecture. Silvia Colpani, a Jones Architecture team member since 2017, is honored to serve on the Ethics Committee and pleased to have a chance to meet with Mass Art students! #design #designatyourservice #officeculture #ethics #modernethics @jonesarch

People use fancy words to describe these spaces --- case study rooms, auditoriums, raked floor classrooms --- c'mon they are just Big Ol' Classrooms. And they have their own set of challenges and opportunities. And we love figuring out how to align the trends we are seeing in these spaces with the unique culture of the campuses where we are lucky to work. Check in on the link below to see Up Close how we are doing that! Thanks to William Horne for the photography and the team at Formation Communications, LLC for help with the messaging!

A big thank you to our design partners at JLG Architects as we move into the design development phase on the White Stadium project. Our work includes the east ("top") side of the image below, as well as the playing field itself. We are working with the City of Boston Public Facilities Department and the Boston Public Schools to address their needs with half of the stadium. This is a public private partnership between the City of Boston and the Boston Unity NWLS Franchise, and their design team led by Legends, Stantec and Moody Nolan. This gorgeous site plan drawing is courtesy of our collaborators at Crowley Cottrell | Landscape Architecture who have been working closely with all of the folks at the City of Boston to find solutions that will stitch this into the fabric of Franklin Park. The exposed rock formations are so elegant in this drawing, you can imagine the glacier scraping across the topography!
