Use of dialects in Italy -- "The use of dialects in Italy represents a unique situation compared to the rest of Europe. Even today in many different parts of Italy dialects are used as an informal way of communicating in different social settings and within families. Contrary to popular belief, in certain Italian regions dialects are widely used, and not only within the older generations. Even though the use of standard #Italian prevails in the younger generations, many young people can express themselves in their own dialect, or at least understand it, in informal social situations." For more information: https://lnkd.in/gWUqk7Dh JTG has performed #translation work between English and Italian, among other languages. For each project, a team of at least two equally qualified translators per #language work in tandem to translate, revise and proof the text. This ensures that each translation is grammatically and syntactically correct, technically accurate, and linguistically and culturally adapted to the target audience. In addition, the JTG project manager provides a final content check of each translation before it is delivered to the client. For more information: https://lnkd.in/dAAGzVDK #ItalianHeritageMonth

A relaxation of official rules around the correct use of apostrophes in #German has not only irritated grammar sticklers but triggered existential fears around the pervasive influence of English. Establishments that feature their owners’ names, with signs like “Rosi’s Bar” or “Kati’s Kiosk” are a common sight around German towns and cities, but strictly speaking they are wrong: unlike English, German does not traditionally use apostrophes to indicate the genitive case or possession. For more information: https://lnkd.in/gxSqSGZx. JTG has performed technical #translation work between English and German, among other languages, for numerous federal agencies and private sector clients. JTG’s translation methodology is to assure that the translation reads as though it were originally written in the target #language. This requires close attention to linguistic and cultural nuances and references. JTG takes a total approach to each assignment focusing on and anticipating how, when and in what environment the translation will be used. For more information: https://lnkd.in/dAAGzVDK

International Translation Day 30 September -- "International #Translation Day is meant as an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of #language professionals, which plays an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security. Transposition of a literary or scientific work, including technical work, from one language into another language, professional translation, including translation proper, interpretation and terminology, is indispensable to preserving clarity, a positive climate and productiveness in international public discourse and interpersonal communication. Thus, on 24 May 2017, the General Assembly adopted resolution 71/288 on the role of language professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development, and declared 30 September as International Translation Day." Why #bilingual literature is needed in a place like #Japan -- Bilingual people often exhibit enhanced multitasking abilities, better attention, and stronger executive control functions. They might also have higher earnings, greater empathy, and even better success on dating apps. In Japan, around 10% of the population is bilingual, with English being the most prevalent second language followed by Korean and Chinese. Bilingual literature exists in Japan, largely due to the demand for #languagelearning resources. Multilingualism in literature and media can help create new identities and challenge bias and discrimination. The #Hungarian #language is part of the Finno-Ugric group within the Uralic language family. It is primarily spoken in Hungary, with significant communities in Slovakia, Romania, and Yugoslavia, as well as smaller groups scattered worldwide. Hungarian is closely related to the Ob-Ugric languages, Mansi and Khanty, spoken in western Siberia. Hungarian has been written in a modified Latin alphabet since the 13th century, with its orthography stabilized in the 16th century with the advent of printing. While Hungarian has borrowed words from languages like Iranian, Turkic, Caucasian, Slavic, Latin, and German, its phonology and grammar remain characteristically Uralic. 'Sushi' Or 'Susi'? #Japan to Rethink Longstanding Romanization Rules -- "There are two broadly accepted ways to write rōmaji, the romanization of Japanese characters in the 26-letter alphabet. One is the Kunrei system, established under a cabinet ordinance in 1937, and the second is the Hepburn system, named after US missionary James Curtis Hepburn, who came to Japan in the nineteenth century and popularized its usage. With the number of visitors to Japan and foreigners living in the country increasing, a council under the Agency for Cultural Affairs has begun deliberations to unify the different writing systems with weight placed on the Hepburn system, which is in more widespread use."
