At Juul Labs, our mission is to help the world’s one billion adult smokers transition completely away from combustible cigarettes, end their use, and combat underage use of our products. Given this mission, we appreciate the US Surgeon General’s report this week, which spotlighted not only the overall persistence of combustible cigarette use in the US and the fact that it continues to lead to the premature death of 490,000 Americans each year, but also the well-known and disparate impacts of smoking among various communities.
About us
Juul Labs is a thriving team of scientists, engineers, designers and professionals who are committed to offering adult smokers alternatives to combustible cigarettes, while combating underage use of our products. JUUL products are designed to transition adult smokers from combustible cigarettes by providing a competitive nicotine experience. Product Juul Labs’ technology was developed in support of our mission. The JUUL product consists of two main components: e-liquid and the JUUL device. JUUL e-liquid aims to provide a nicotine experience similar to combustible cigarette use. The JUUL device is built to deliver this e-liquid as a vapor while maintaining a low temperature regulation system designed to minimize combustion. Revolutionary thinking Adam Bowen and James Monsees co-founded Juul Labs when they applied their background in product design to the challenge of finding a true alternative to smoking combustible cigarettes. As smokers for many years, they could find no acceptable alternative. Adam and James recognized an opportunity to apply industrial design to the tobacco industry. The result was the JUUL product. Our commitment We understand that trust in our company and category has eroded with our stakeholders and it is our responsibility to earn back that trust through our actions. To earn a license to operate in society, we are putting stakeholder trust at the center of what we do and make choices that are informed by the views of our stakeholders, including and especially our regulators. Our intent Our customer base is the world’s one billion adult smokers. We do not want any non-nicotine users, especially those underage, to try our products as they exist only to transition the world’s one billion adult smokers away from combustible cigarettes. We believe smokers should first and foremost quit. But for those who cannot or will not quit, access to alternatives to combustible cigarettes and accurate information about those alternatives is critical.

“When cigarettes are offered on every shelf, ideally you would want adult smokers to have access to products like JUUL, with accurate information, to understand the choices they’re making… I do believe that with the right regulatory framework, with responsible manufacturing and product technology, and science and relative risk information that’s accurate and accessible to smokers – I think we can be on a journey, maybe in my lifetime, where we start to see a world with cigarettes on the way out the door finally.” -- Juul Labs’ CEO K.C. Crosthwaite on the BBC News global leader interviews series
Great to have K.C. Crosthwaite, Chairman and CEO of Juul Labs as one of our global leader interviews on BBC News. The UK’s prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer has been urged to rethink new laws to restrict vaping after warnings it could create a massive black market. Australian politicians who pioneered a similar crackdown have warned it was a flop that was then exploited by criminals. In January, Australia banned disposable vapes along with the sale or use of any e-cigarette that contains nicotine without a doctor’s prescription, going further than the current plans in the UK. A report by the parliament in the state of Victoria found the illicit vape market could be worth up to £258million. JUUL Labs, based in Washington DC, its Chairman and CEO, K.C Crosthwaite has been tasked with leading the e-cigarette maker through a period of regulation, mis-information and mounting public concern over the addictiveness and health effects of vaping. K.C says JUUL must earn consumers trust and is ready to hit the reset button on the industry’s tarnished image. Many thanks to Sophie Bartlett for all her help organising.
