As the U.S. offshore wind market transitions from design to installation, the recent O&M conference hosted by the Oceantic Network in Virginia Beach has put a spotlight on a critical yet often overlooked aspect: cable integrity. At Kalypso Offshore Energy, we understand that commitment must extend beyond installation to encompass the entire lifecycle of offshore wind farms. For developers and project owners, the availability of a dependable cable repair solution is not merely an option; it is a fundamental necessity to ensure operational continuity and fortify resilience. By securing local, experienced entities equipped with essential assets through framework agreements, we can guarantee a swift and efficient response. This not only significantly reduces cable downtime but also mitigates revenue loss for asset owners. Overall, it's clear: the trajectory of the U.S. offshore wind industry is set to redefine itself. It's not solely about the initial installation phase but about forging a robust, sustainable, and autonomous supply chain, ready to address the challenges of the future with confidence and efficiency. #KalypsoOffshore #OffshoreWind #RenewableEnergy
President & CEO @ Oceantic Network (formerly Business Network for Offshore Wind) | Clean Energy Advocate
Cables break. Everything does, of course, but are we ready for that in the U.S. offshore wind market? On the sunset of our O&M conference in Virginia Beach, I’ve once again been poring over articles about cable failure rate and thinking about the resiliencies we’ll need to build in an American offshore wind market. I’ve always thought cables were an overlooked part of the offshore wind market, so much so that we used to call our cables-only conference “Critical Connections.” We are seeing a sea change in our industry–finally moving from design to installation– and soon we will need a maintenance infrastructure ready for a pipeline of commercial-scale projects being deployed. Last July, I visited member companies Foss Maritime Company, which is building a dedicated O&M facility in New Bedford, and Waterson Terminal Services, LLC, which is transforming ProvPort into many things, including a cable storage laydown area with the help of Wind Cable Services. These are companies making investments in the full lifecycle of an offshore wind farm, not just the installation phase, and are actively maturing the U.S. industry. We must keep filling in the gaps and proactively identify and address future needs. We’ve been blessed to have our members like DEME Offshore NL, Boskalis, and Jan De Nul Group install cable systems on our first commercial projects, but soon those vessels, under great demand, will sail away. Per Spinergie (https://lnkd.in/eJEzQUBf) “contracted CLV vessel days have grown by 22%” since 2016, and the multi-day transatlantic journey will only add to that number. If a cable breaks, will vessels be available for a quick fix and able to operate freely in U.S. waters? Or will repairs be delayed due to the international demand we’ve seen in other vessel categories? In 2018, a hot topic of debate at “Critical Connections” was exploring the telecommunication industry’s model of framework agreements. Industry experts strongly urged our emerging offshore wind market to apply this model to effectively service cable failures and repairs. The framework agreement included having a dedicated vessel available in your home market at all times to repair cables. This model ensures an efficient response to cable issues and maintains the operational integrity of offshore wind projects. We’ve seen a services gap like this fill in before. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC, is proactively building a $246 million subsea rock installer, despite foreign-flagged vessels being permitted to do the same installation. Why? Because GLDD sees the opportunity and longevity of our U.S. offshore wind industry. Global demand for offshore wind is at an all-time high and continuing to grow amidst a global shortage of installation vessels. This organization has always been dedicated to building a domestic supply chain that can support our ambitions, and that includes cable maintenance.
