Can AI tell us what stories to look out for? The team at Question Everything has been playing around with a new technology that sucks up tons of social media posts, and then uses AI to figure out what ideas are forming in the shadows of the internet before they hit the mainstream. Brian Reed interviews a journalist who uses this tech, to see what conversations are brewing right now that we might want to keep an eye out for in the coming weeks. Can Journalism Save a Marriage? That's the question we explore on this week's "Question Everything". A politically divided couple, Dick and Emily Newton, found themselves unable to agree on what news sources to trust. Which meant they couldn't agree on a set of facts. On reality. Not a great situation for a marriage. As Emily put it: "I know my husband. I know what a smart, sensitive, thoughtful person he is. He's very generous. I know all that about him. And to have him suddenly be aligned to this person who I found absolutely despicable was very troubling." In a moment that should probably be the premise of a rom-com, Dick and Emily decide to go searching for a news outlet that could bring them back together. A source that a self-admitted "bleeding heart liberal" and a Trump supporter could both trust. What they found was Tangle , run by Issac Saul . It changed things for Dick and Emily in a way that is honestly incredible. And it's not just them. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/e_mYRePd Placement Theory Brian Reed

This year, one of the most accomplished investigative reporters of our time quit journalism, because he lost his confidence in it. He lost faith In the ability of facts to change minds. The reporter is Barton Gellman. Over three decades, he’s brought us the Edward Snowden leaks about the NSA. Crucial reporting from Iraq. And prescient stories in the Atlantic in the run-up to the 2020 election, about how Trump might attempt to subvert it. On this week’s "Question Everything" with Brian Reed: How one of the most accomplished reporters of our time lost his confidence in journalism. https://lnkd.in/ei4-EfEj Placement Theory

Brian Reed was questioning everything he knew about journalism. So he recently sat down with a critic. A fellow journalist who called his most well-known story, S-Town, "morally indefensible." They spoke for hours. She grilled him with questions. "Oh Brian, why are you doing this to yourself?" she asked. He did it because he’s worried and confused about the state of journalism. And he thinks, as journalists, we need to be more open to self-reflection. To questioning our work. That's the mission of his new show: "Question Everything". He is re-examining everything about a career he thought he knew. It drops today wherever you get your podcasts. From KCRW and Placement Theory, a new production company he co-founded with his longtime This American Life colleague Robyn Semien. Check out the podcast's first two episodes below on all podcast platforms https://lnkd.in/gaTGVeS9

"Oh Brian, why are you doing this to yourself?" I talked to a critic recently. A fellow journalist who called my most well-known story, S-Town, "morally indefensible." We spoke for hours. She grilled me with questions. It was...interesting. I did it because I'm worried and confused about the state of journalism. And I think, as journalists, we need to be more open to self-reflection. To questioning our work. That's the mission of my new show: "Question Everything". I'm re-examining everything about a career I thought I knew. It drops September 12th. From KCRW and Placement Theory, a new production company I co-founded with my longtime This American Life colleague Robyn Semien. I'm excited. And nervous. Welcome to ‘Question Everything,’ a podcast for anyone who’s ever been fascinated and frustrated by journalism, knowing how crucial it is. ‘Question Everything’ was sparked when Brian Reed received a phone call from his lawyer who informed him that he was getting sued over his award-winning podcast S-Town. The lawsuit claimed that S-Town was not actually journalism. A perplexed Reed soon found himself questioning everything that we think we know about practicing journalism. ❓ Tune in, question everything, and let’s unravel the complexities of modern journalism together. Coming September 12 wherever you get your podcasts. Placement Theory
