Empowering the Next Generation of Social Impact Leaders: The Kelley Changemaker Scholarship The Kelley Changemaker Scholarship is transformative, supporting Kelley business students pursuing unpaid or underpaid internships focused on making a positive difference in the world. It's not just financial aid; it's an investment in future leaders passionate about creating sustainable change. Recently, we had the honor of hosting patrick decker, the visionary and donor behind this scholarship, at Indiana University. On October 30th, Patrick sat down with former scholarship recipients to hear firsthand how this opportunity has shaped their careers and perspectives on social impact in business. The stories students shared were nothing short of inspiring. From working with non-profits to driving sustainability initiatives in corporations, our Changemakers are already leaving their mark on the world. Summer 2024 recipient Alisha Ahmed, a Kelley School of Business senior, shared how this scholarship gave her the financial freedom to make a difference in India. She, like Decker, is from Evansville, Indiana, and was inspired to learn about his career journey in uplifting social impact initiatives. Summer 2023 recipient Caroline Woertz, another senior at the Kelley School of Business, shared how this scholarship allowed her to intern with a non-profit here in Bloomington, and emphasized the scholarship's importance in supporting communities. Check out our video featuring more of our recipients and their experiences: https://lnkd.in/gCjFDhWG A huge thank you to Patrick and Nussara Decker, and to everyone who attended the event. Your dedication to using business as a force for good is truly remarkable.

The 2024 Social Issue Fair was a success, bringing together 15 different student organizations committed to addressing real-world challenges. Established in 2022, this annual event showcases the power of education in driving meaningful change. Attendees learned about a wide range of social issues, from clean water access to workplace discrimination, through engaging tables hosted by student groups, university offices, and corporate sponsors. The fair not only provided an opportunity for students to learn about various social issues but outlined concrete ways to get involved and make an impact in the future. Our corporate sponsors Accenture, Cummins Inc., and ALDI USA shared their social initiatives, offering a real-world look into corporate social responsibility. This networking experience allowed students to connect with companies that align with their passions, paving the way for impactful career paths. A special thank you goes to our KISI Student Ambassadors for their volunteer efforts, and a huge shout-out to Fruzsina Szabó, our new assistant director of KISI, whose behind-the-scenes work made this event a success. #Kelley #KISI #SocialImpact #SocialIssueFair #IU

Interesting development in the AI and social impact space: Lenovo has launched its AI for Social Impact Lab, partnering with Tech To The Rescue to support non-profits in addressing climate change and improving education access. Calvin J. Crosslin, President of Lenovo Foundation, states: "As businesses and industry readily embrace AI, we need to make sure that non-profits are included and equipped for the massive transformation that AI is creating." While this initiative aims to bridge the AI gap for non-profits, it raises important questions about AI's role in social impact. As we've seen, AI can perpetuate biases and exclusion if not carefully implemented. This project aligns with Lenovo's Smarter AI for All strategy, but we feel it's crucial to critically examine what "AI for All" really means in practice. What do you think? Is AI the right tool for addressing complex social issues? How can we ensure AI benefits everyone, not just those with access to resources? Since 2010, we have worked with Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, Habitat for Humanity International, and Whirlpool Corporation to help build homes. Each fall, Indiana University - Kelley School of Business students, staff, and faculty are invited to volunteer with us to construct a house and impact our community together. We just wrapped up our latest build and are feeling incredibly thankful for the community we have here at Kelley. To the 137 volunteers who participated this year, you've built more than houses; you've built hope. Your efforts are helping dreams come true, like those of Angelique Nesbitt, a mother of six who will soon be the homeowner of this house. 🏡🔨 #HabitatForHumanity #YouthEmpowerment #CommunityImpact #SocialImpact #KISI #Leadership #whirlpoolcorp #mchabitat #kelleyinstituteforsocialimpact

A new article from Business Insider highlights how major companies are preparing for the upcoming US presidential election on November 5, 2024. Interestingly, businesses are not just focusing on potential policy changes, but also on the immediate impact of Election Day itself. - Constellation Brands, maker of Corona and Modelo, expects a slowdown in beer consumption around the election. They've noticed this trend during previous contentious federal elections, with consumers pulling back across the entire sector. - Delta Air Lines is bracing for a decrease in travel demand, projecting a 1 percentage point reduction in revenue for the quarter due to fewer people traveling in the two weeks around Election Day. - Citigroup reported a 44% increase in investment banking fees, driven by clients accelerating their debt issuance activities ahead of the election. Have you considered how the upcoming election might impact your industry or consumer behavior? Are you seeing any changes in your business or personal spending habits as we approach November 5? Share your thoughts and experiences with us! Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gnzYeAxy #Election2024 #SocialImpact #ConsumerBehavior #EconomicTrends #PoliticalEconomy

We're thrilled to share the success of our 14th annual Indiana University - Kelley School of Business Habitat for Humanity International build! This year, our dedicated students, faculty, and staff came together to construct a home for Bloomington resident Angelique Nesbitt and her six children. More than 3,200 IU students, staff, faculty and alumni have come together over the years to build homes alongside Monroe County families. The experience not only provide a safe and affordable home for a deserving family but also offers our students a unique opportunity to apply their business skills in a real-world, socially impactful context. Nesbitt’s new climate-resilient and energy-efficient home is being built through BuildBetter with Whirlpool Corporation. The initiative aims to deliver an average of 45% predicted energy-cost savings per family, compared to code-built homes, and a 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per home. We at KISI are proud of our long-standing commitment to community service and the way our students embrace the challenge of making a difference. Congratulations to Amber and her family on their new home, and a big thank you to all our volunteers and partners who made this possible! A new article from Trellis Group discusses Greenhouse gas emissions, but this time focuses on the film production industry. They note that emissions from film production "typically account for more than half" of Netflix's total greenhouse gas emissions, according to the company’s 2023 ESG report. Both Disney and Netflix are looking into new, non-diesel technologies for film sets, and most crews are interested in these new technologies because "they are quieter and don’t emit the fumes that diesel generators created." Some productions have already started to make this alternative power generation switch, including big names like “Stranger Things,” “Bridgerton,” and “Virgin River,” testing out solar campers and hydrogen-power units. On the other hand, some worry that this energy will not hold up in low temperatures and adverse weather conditions. Have you ever considered the environmental impact of your favorite Netflix show? Do you think moving away from Diesel is worth the risk? Share your thoughts with us at KISI! A new article from The Guardian discusses a new attempt to limit the impact of fast fashion in France. The article states that if this law is passed, it would make France the first country in the world to use legislation to “limit the excesses of ultra fast fashion”, said Christophe Béchu, minister for the ecological transition. The ban targets fast fashion particularly because of its environmental impacts and price, which often harm sustainable producers due to their higher price points. The article voices concerns from environmental advocates like Anne-Cecile Violland, Horizons deputy, who says “Textile is the most polluting industry,” adding that the sector accounted for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions and was a major polluter of water. What’s your take on a fast fashion ban? Is France targeting the polluting industry for the planet or limiting imports into their economy? Share your thoughts with us at KISI!
