✨Building a Truly Reflective Pro-Democracy Public Leadership “We’ve learned that to build an evolving, inclusive, effective democracy, we must focus not only on developing leaders who are reflective of the nation-state but who can also change the conditions in which they operate.” Lindiwe Mazibuko, Tainah Pereira, and Erin Vilardi’s article in Stanford Social Innovation Review looks at how we can build a pro-democracy public leadership that is truly reflective, equipped, and committed to advancing an inclusive democracy. 💭Grassroots Strategies to Combat Election-Related Misinformation “More than ever, we need to recognize, value, and support the work of civil society organizations… It is about recognizing that the government will never be able to solve all the problems alone and that it is our civic responsibility to get involved in the public arena in order to be part of the construction of the solutions we would like to see.” Jeanine Abrams McLean, PhD and Gabriel Marmentini, PhD’s article in Stanford Social Innovation Review examines how local engagement with communities, civic education, and efforts focused on laws and regulation can combat election-related misinformation. ⭐Democracy Fellow Spotlight⭐ Keseb Democracy Fellow Tshepo Fokane of Alliance for Rural Democracy recently participated in an interview with SABC where she talked about the impact of the Restitution of Land Rights Act 30 years after its passing. “When we think of land justice, we mean something very different [than restitution or restoration], because it’s really tied to so many non-white people’s identities because of the racially discriminatory practices that resulted in so many people losing their land and property rights.” “If the bulk [of land claims] had actually been settled through financial compensation, then it may not be land restitution. It could be a form of compensation, it could be a form of restoration, but it’s not what restitution is or was envisaged to achieve.“ 📽️Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/ggYKHqW4 #democracy #democracychampion

📝Invigorating and Expanding Civic Power “By fostering transparent and accessible channels for public engagement, we can nurture a more responsive and inclusive democracy where the people can govern and where all people, including those who have been historically marginalized or excluded from political spaces, can engage and participate in politics and democracy.” Áurea Carolina, Tessa Dooms, and Julian Walker’s article in Stanford Social Innovation Review explores three approaches for unlocking people’s civic agency to engage in individual and collective action. 🗳Ensuring Free, Fair, and Trusted Elections “Building, strengthening, enhancing, and defending democracy is, by its essence, a collective endeavor… we can only defend and strengthen democracy collectively, through coalitions that are willing to set aside their differences and act together to prevent this pact from falling apart.” Farbod Faraji and Flávia Pellegrino’s article in Stanford Social Innovation Review examines three approaches learned from recent efforts in Brazil and the United States to promote free, fair, and trusted elections. ⭐Democracy Fellow Spotlight⭐ Keseb Democracy Fellow Erin Vilardi’s organization Vote Run Lead was recently featured in a GlobeNewswire article celebrating Vote Run Lead’s 10th anniversary. “Vote Run Lead was born out of a bold dream of training women to lead in public office. In the 10 years since launching Vote Run Lead, we’ve grown into a vibrant, powerful community of women and gender-expansive leaders reshaping government at all levels. The historic gains we are celebrating today- and the thousands of leaders we’ve trained- show how far we’ve come and the bright future we’re building together,” stated Erin. 🌏"The innovation of democracy well beyond institutions requires the presence of hands-on doing, carrying out joint actions from a collective action to improve the public environment… To reimagine and recreate democracy, we cannot underestimate the importance of these things. People will say many times that all of this is too small, it will not make a difference. But I see the power of these events in the transformation [and in] the trajectory of people.” ✨Last month, Keseb hosted a virtual panel discussion with Tessa Dooms, Julian Walker, Koketso Moeti, Áurea Carolina, and Lucas Louback on three approaches for unlocking people’s civic agency to engage in individual and collective action. The approaches included setting the political agenda through people’s power, rebuilding democracy through local institutions, and democratizing power to affect change. 📽️Watch the video in English here: https://lnkd.in/gSD3J_Yd 📽️Watch the video with Portuguese interpretation here: https://lnkd.in/g-r-HXYY #democracy #democracychampions #democracyfellows #innovation #21stcentury

💡“There are many people who are so committed to the work that they do around democracy, and especially because this [work] goes way beyond the election cycle it's actually a core of people's identity. [Because of this] it's really much easier for people to have more faith and trust in their leaders and also for leaders to be quite honest, vocal, and transparent.” ✨Last month, Keseb hosted a virtual panel discussion with Jeanine Abrams McLean, PhD, Gabriel Marmentini, PhD, Tshepo Fokane, and Andrew Clarke on how grassroots strategies can combat election-related misinformation. The panelists discussed how targeted, local engagement with communities coupled with civic education are effective strategies to strengthen information ecosystems, alongside national and international efforts focused on laws and regulation. 📽️Watch the video in English here: https://lnkd.in/gK8vm2CC 📽️Watch the video with Portuguese interpretation here: https://lnkd.in/guukU9br #democracy #democracychampions #democracyfellows #innovation #21stcentury
