Meet Caylin and Crystal, a mother-son duo showing the power of lifelong learning. When Caylin walked into his first Model UN meeting as a 7th grader, the room was filled with older, experienced student leaders. Though initially filled with self-doubt, his determination and mentorship turned that uncertainty into strength. Today, he's the elected President and was named Outstanding Eighth Grader of the Year by the Illinois Network of Charter Schools. While Caylin was discovering his potential, his mother, Crystal, embarked on her own educational journey. Through our adult education programming, Penn Foster, she achieved her dreams of earning her diploma, showing that education has no age limit. “My number one goal is just to pour back into children and give back to my community as much as I can. I have to hold myself to a higher expectation because I’m teaching little people. They can be anything they want to be and it’s important that we understand that we need a community of people to get where we want to go in life.” Congratulations to D’Naya Mims from KIPP Ascend Middle School, a 2024 Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award winner! “I want my children to succeed. When they lack belief in themselves, I let them know that if no one is showing up for them, I am. I believe in my kids.
