This will be my last post addressing the question - “How did you become a CEO?” After exiting FitLinxx, I ran into someone who owned multiple dental practices (another random encounter that shaped my career). He explained how difficult it was to run a successful practice because: 1️⃣ Dental insurance reimbursements were becoming increasingly unprofitable, and 2️⃣ Uninsured patients did not visit very often and did not complete much treatment when they did visit. His insight stuck with me. I decided to dive in and complete some market research 🤿 . The research clearly pointed to a large opportunity to lower the barrier to care by enabling dental practices to offer coverage directly to patients. And in 2018, Kleer was born — a platform empowering dental practices to offer subscription-based care plans directly to patients. 🎉 It was actually the first time in my career that I had success from the start. Dental practices embraced our solution and provided feedback on how we could make it better. We iterated and grew, iterated and grew, and continue to do so. 📈 In May, Kleer merged with Membersy. We are the market leader providing the most capable subscription platform to dental practices nationwide and are trusted by the largest DSOs, fastest growing emerging groups, and most independent private practices. It’s been truly a pleasure. So, my final takeaway: Big opportunities often start with random encounters. Stay curious and ask questions. It can change everything. 🔍

According to a recent Becker’s article, shrinking profit margins and stagnant insurance reimbursements will continue to hit practices hard. So, how do we navigate this? One word: 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Membership plans are a game-changer. Here’s why: • More profitability: No more relying on low insurance payouts. • Steady revenue: Predictable cash flow every month. • Happier patients: Affordable care, no red tape. Happy New Year! I hope it's a great year for everyone. 🍾 After taking a break last week I wanted to get back to answering the question - “How did you become a CEO?” My next career move got me there, but it also nearly broke me. In 2006, I left Microsoft to follow my passion. I joined FitLinxx, a small start-up focused on fitness tracking technology. The company was struggling to stay afloat and my job was to find a way to turn it around. Everyone told me that I was making a mistake leaving Microsoft, but my passion for applying technology to help people improve their health overcame the doubt. After 12 months I was named CEO. I had finally made it! 🎉 However, the honeymoon did not last long. The 2008 financial crisis hit just 5 months in. Financial systems froze and liquidity disappeared. We (and many other companies) were dead in the water. Surviving meant laying off 50% of our team, renegotiating debt agreements, raising capital, and tightly managing cash flow. 🥵 It was grueling and unglamorous work that tested my limits, but we survived. We then pivoted hard, expanding into wearable devices. We built 1) the Nike+ sensor, a game-changing fitness device, 2) the Pebble, an all-day activity tracking sensor, and 3) Ampstrip, a revolutionary cardiovascular patch. These products transformed the business and set us up for an eventual exit. 🎉 What did I learn? 1️⃣ Bet on yourself. Leaving the comfort of a large organization is scary, but once you get to the other side you will find a way to be successful because your passion and self reliance will get you there. 2️⃣ Establish a strong mission and culture. We were focused on helping people monitor and manage their health. We never lost that focus, even when things looked dire. Without our mission and culture we would not have made it. 3️⃣ Opportunity is everywhere. Even in the worst part of the financial crisis we could see opportunity. I have learned over and over again that there is always opportunity around you. You just need to look for it.
