  • Efforts to provide drinking water to the community have been a part of Knoxville's history for many years before KUB was founded 85 years ago! It all began in the 1800s when Knoxville’s early residents relied on natural springs and wells to meet their water needs. In 1883, Knoxville Water Company began supplying water service. The Knoxville Electric Power and Water Board (renamed Knoxville Utilities Board in 1947) began providing electricity and water in 1939. Fast forward to today, and KUB proudly provides high-quality drinking water to over 83,600 customers across the Knoxville area. We take in over 30 million gallons of water from the Tennessee River daily and treat it at the Mark B. Whitaker Water Treatment Plant. Our state-of-the-art Water Quality Lab ensures the water reaching KUB customers is the highest quality. As we celebrate KUB's 85th anniversary, we remain committed to ensuring clean, safe water is always at your fingertips. 💧🔧

  • November's tree of the month is the American Elm! Native to East Tennessee, the American elm is a broadleaf, deciduous tree well known for the shade it provides during the growing season. It can be planted anywhere from urban streets to forested woodlots. Despite being nearly wiped out by Dutch Elm Disease in many U.S. urban areas during the 1950s, the American elm has recovered well, and many disease-resistant cultivars are now available to plant. With the American elm considered a tall-zone tree, you should plant it at least 50 feet from utility maintenance zones. To learn more about planting trees, visit www.kub.org/plantsmart.
