About us

Koinonia is a state-licensed, non-profit public service organization serving communities across California and Nevada. We exist to bring hope and healing to foster youth and families through meaningful relationships and quality programs and services. We guide families through the approval process and equip them with the tools they need to care for foster children. We provide in-home support as well as mental health services. The goal is always to reunite the foster children with their family of origin. In some cases, a short-term placement turns into a long-term placement, sometimes taking the path towards adoption. We navigate this process with our families and we also work with parents interested in private adoption. “Koinonia” (Koy-no-nee’-ah) is a Greek word which means “fellowship.” It carries with it the meaning of a committed, trustworthy and dependable relationship. It is this “koinonia” relationship that has made the difference in the lives of thousands of foster children over the past 40 years.

  • Read the Hilterbrand family's decades long journey in foster care! ✨ "We decided to become Foster Parents, way back in 1987. At the time we had two boys 8 + 11 years old. We had no idea how this decision would affect our lives. We decided it would be best to take placements of boys similar in age to our boys. Over the years we have probably had about 100 or more boys. Most have been with us for long periods (years) of time. We strive to make them feel they are an important part of our home and part of our family. Those years were busy, and fun. After our biological boys were grown and gone, we continued to accept referrals. Typically we had 3 or 4 placements. There have been many moments of success, and there were tough times we dealt with too. As we got older, we became more selective in placements. We received a referral for a young 12-year boy “Robbie.” Many times, Robbie asked if we would ever adopt him. He wanted a family. Our response was you are part of our family and can stay here as long as you need too. Surprisingly, one night my husband, Cleo, asked if I would consider adopting Robbie! I was shocked. Cleo has always kept his guard up and did not become emotionally attached to the boys. Robbie somehow was able to break into Cleo’s heart in a different way and they became remarkably close and understood each other. We were able to adopt him, and he completed our Family. We have 9 grandchildren, and age wise Robbie is right in the middle! Robbie is now a Senior at Downey High School. He enjoys helping people, and being active. He has become secure and very well adjusted. I often think of different kids that have been part of our family and how their lives have enriched us, no matter how long they were in our home, a few days or years and years. Each child is different. Not all are easy, but all are worth it. My husband and I are a team, no matter how difficult things are at times. Communication is invaluable in keeping each other aware of things. We wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again." #FamilyStories #FosterCare #Koinonia
