Bio is Tech™

About us

At Koniku Inc., we take the view that a biological neuron is a *material*. An intelligent material or component to be utilized in real life products or devices. Clearly, this proposition opens up a unique set of technology challenges, solvable. It simultaneously offers up an unimaginably vast trove of opportunities. Opportunities ranging from pure-play neurotech, *living devices* to advanced brain-machine interfaces. Koniku is the worlds first corporation of its kind. We are the leading brand in neurotechnology devices. Our goal is to harness the "raw" biological basis of intelligence. Our maxim is: “Bio is Tech™”. We are convinced that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from nature.”

    "Smell Processors"

Koniku's Founder, CEO & CTO | Smell Cyborgs, Bioengineering, and AI

I recently had the chance to meet great founders & CEO's building exciting deep tech companies including Hon Weng C. & Alex Wiltschko. HUGE thanks to the "big JB" for bringing us together. I could not be more excited about this field. Osmo is creating smell through software or AI and the other is a biocompute company Cortical Labs. Koniku sits somewhere in the middle, start with "smell processor" or "smell cyborg" then build outwards. We believe a myriad of application layers will be built on our "smell processors". Cortical labs showed you can teach cultured cells to play pong - read the paper. I saw the hardware and it reminded of the long years and many nights in the lab in Zürich, Umeå, St. Gallen & London.. When I look at our hardware and others you can make out how we got here. You need the eye for it and understand who did what & why certain design choices were made. Here is some background: Jerome "Jerry" Pines (RIP) - a Caltech, particle physicist built the first MEA's (70's & 80's) - multichannel systems (MCS) in Reutlingen ran with it. MCS was acquired by Harvard Apparatus for a $11M 😳!!! I met Jerry once in Reutlingen - amazing man! Peter Fromherz from Max Planck, Martinsried - brought a shit ton of rigor to the whole enterprise - added active elements to ordinary glass electrodes. Prof. Fromherz graciously "reviewed" my M.Sc. thesis. He probably went meh! I don't believe anyone has done more work to popularize MEA's & expand the reach of MEA's than Steve M. Potter, PhD. Daniel Wagenaar PhD thesis is still the best work I have seen to date in terms of characterizing neural populations on chip - if you can find better, i'll be waiting for it. But you should go read it nevertheless. In our old lab at the ETH Zürich, Henry Baltes & Andreas Hierlemann led the INPRO project. An EU project - if you can believe it. Within the INPRO project, we built one of the most advanced chips at the time (~2004). Sadik Hafizovic's PhD used Liquid State Machines (and the INPRO Neurochip) to recognize a character sequence using cultured neurons. The INPRO chip forked (by Urs Frey) to create MaxWell Biosystems. Your take home message is this: "AGI will be done through biological neurons on chip. I am yet to see empirical evidence that says otherwise." The commercialization of all that wealth of knowledge is still at the ground floor. Hey, look at Nvidia...since 1993. So I am not bothered about it. Soon it will be everything everywhere all at once. If you know, you know...if you don't, you chase trends & hype. Have an amazing weekend & Eid Mubarak once again :-). P.S. Yes, there is a redacted box. Rules are rules! Ask Hon Weng C. for it, he might like you enough to show you. Plus he is super kind & extremely good looking guy :-). There is also Thomas Oxley, he built the cool stentrode for BMI.

Thanks for the feedback & sharing - appreciate the engagement. Camila. Still looking forward to working with you. Most might not know this, the Konikore has been many years in the making. It was the subject of two (ETH Zürich & Imperial College in London) PhD thesis BTW - at least adjacent to it and PhD's uncompleted - LoL. First, the "smell processors" at Koniku are fundamentally different. The initial pioneers of this work at least when it comes to cell assays are a.) DARPA 2.) Matsunami Group. 3.) Linda B. Buck and Richard Axel...many others too numerous to mention. The initial work showed that you can indeed force expression of GPCR's in cells with Chaperone's. The approach was getting these GPCR's on a substrate and measure electrical parameter changes. We thought this is approach panned too much to silicon as a sole substrate. There is also work in yeast cells for DNT detection - we think this approach is limited for obvious reasons. We have built a chipset which uses synbio as a key element and engineered a different class of biochips. We have built not a smell sensor but a smell processor. Meaning it spits out results...happy to clarify more. Second, the dog is actually useful for the defense use case. Its NOT a gimmick! But I understand your issue with "silicon valley style". I stand behind silicon valley style 100%. Thanks for the compliment of being sexy, that was not my intention but I will take it. In Silicon valley get some (but only some) things wrong, but largely silicon valley delivers. The dog can go into unbuilt terrains and find explosive compounds. The mobile robot can also use wheels for built terrains. For example Ascento robots. Than

We were recently in #Doha to do a proper "world premiere" of our quadruped with a "smell processor" or "smell cyborg". We built it. I hope you enjoy it. The future is "synthetic (neuro) bio + silicon = amazing(AGI)". I am convinced this is the *only* viable path to #AGI The #cyborgdog or #smellprocessor are actually remarkably useful. If you want to detect bombs and landmines with a device having a footprint of about 10cm x 10cm x 10cm, we got you. Contrabands like amphetamine, fentanyl and THC send a message. Chemical threats for example, hydrogen sulphide in industrial settings, yes that too, on the SAME device. Chemical weapons, and more... Reach out, you can order one straight away - office@koniku.com. Lead time is about 6 months. You can be an early adopter with strong customer support. We are customers first, and builders second... Thanks to everyone that made this happen. You know who you are. Thank you!!! P.S. The Quadruped is not built by Koniku Inc. Its off the shelf but have to customize it for you - at least for now.

In February, I had the opportunity to attend Web Summit Qatar 🇶🇦 with my good friend and fellow woman in tech Amani Gayle! It was an amazing experience, I was able to learn a lot & meet lots of likeminded people. Here’s a quick rundown of my personal highlights (in no particular order): - a Microsoft Azure, OpenAI - powered hijabi chatbot called Ask Ai.SHA that answers questions on a range of questions about Qatar from News and Lifestyle to Economy and Government Incentives (I loveddddd the play on words and the Muslim representation and was a great way to learn more about Qatar as a visitor) - attended a very interesting conference on data risk management with Google Cloud and also had a demo of the rebranded Gemini AI - attended HM Queen Rania of Jordan’s speech on how social media has provided a unique alternate media source and provided alternative perspectives on the situation in Palestine & how technology can be harnessed to help raise awareness of those suffering around the world - meeting like minded people in the women in tech lounge like Carmen Antiqueira who shared some great careers advice and Maryam Saad who shared her experience, insights and journey as a woman in tech - attended a Shell conference on planning your career and how to make the most of your experience - live demo from Koniku who showcased an AGI that can detect smell!! the technology is modelled on neural connections in the human brain (honestly I was amazed) & discussion around the future potential of converting your bathroom into a data centre using biotechnology than medical professionals could use to detect, diagnose and treat patients - the interactive TikTok and Snapchat booths were fun to explore, the exclusive filters were a personal fave and the tripods for content creators were a nice touch #womenintech #websummit #websummitqatar #technology #ai #tech #agi #biotechnology #muslim #qatar

🌟First Time's the Charm: How Web Summit Qatar Exceeded All Expectations 💫 Reflecting on my Web Summit Qatar journey, which took place in Doha from Feb 26 to 29, it exemplifies how global events can brilliantly integrate local culture into their branding. Witnessing the Web Summit’s localization, blending seamlessly with Arabic designs, was a masterclass in thoughtful branding - truly well done. Among my lasting impressions: - #Queen Rania‘s excellent speech highlighting the #Gaza humanitarian crisis and the importance of digital social responsibility showcasing how impactful our digital platforms can be. - Katherine Maher, CEO of the Web Summit, not only shared the essential tip about wearing comfortable shoes during such an event but also marked her next career chapter by announcing her move to lead NPR. Her leadership has undoubtedly left a significant mark. - Discovering Koniku’s innovation was a highlight – revealing for the first time a real dog robot with the ability to recognize smells. A step forward in technology marrying biology! 👃🐶🤖 - The opportunity to meet visionaries like Hind AlKuwari of adeer, the insightful journalist Ahmad Fakhouri, and the talented marketer Aya Atassi Khanji, amongst others, was nothing short of inspiring. - Reconnecting with HEC Paris alums reminded us of shared goals and passions within our community. I am proud to have been part of this with Qatar Shell, delving into the intersection of tech and energy for a better tomorrow. With #Doha set to host the Web Summit again next year, the anticipation is already building. I encourage everyone to experience this vibrant, insightful, and esteemed event. The blend of innovation, culture, and networking is unparalleled. #WebSummitDoha #Innovation #Networking #HECParisAlumni #technology
