About us

Land Trust of Napa County is a local nonprofit dedicated to preserving the character of Napa by permanently protecting land. Formed in 1976, the Land Trust works cooperatively with landowners and our community to protect agricultural land, water resources, wildlife and wildlife corridors, scenic open space, forests, ranches, wildflower meadows and native biodiversity throughout Napa County. We permanently protect land through the use of conservation easements that limit future development, or through direct land acquisition. • We are pleased to announce the acquisition of the 1,318-acre Mead Ranch near Atlas Peak above Yountville. The property is significant for Napa’s rare biodiversity and it is also in a key location, very close to the 2,300-acre Walt Ranch, protected last year, and to our 1,380-acre Sutro Preserve. Protecting Mead Ranch is a key step in a large-scale effort to create a continuous corridor of protected land running along the entire length of the ridge above the east side of Napa Valley, from Robert Louis Stevenson State Park to American Canyon. A number of rare plant species are found on the property, including a new species that was discovered and named after the Mead family, Mead's Owl's Clover (Castilleja ambigua var. meadii), a wildflower found only on Mead Ranch, and one nearby property, nowhere else in the world! The Few-flowered Navarretia (Navarretia leucocephala ssp. pauciflora), is a Federally listed endangered species also found on the property and is only known to exist in Lake and Napa Counties! We are forever thankful to Jane Mead, a long-time friend and supporter of the Land Trust, for donating this property through her estate. Before her untimely passing, at only 61, Jane, a well-known poet, decided to leave a lasting legacy by permanently protecting her family property by donating it to the Land Trust. Besides protecting its rare wildflowers and wildlife, Jane hoped her property could provide a place for future generations, especially children, to learn about Napa’s natural values and the importance of protecting them.
