Language conferences are like language models. Some are large and all-encompassing, while others are small, focused, specialized. Like the LT-Innovate conference #LI2024 in Vienna earlier this week.
You might have seen very few selfies or group photos from the event (no selfie backdrop!) but important ideas were discussed, including:
• We're all conducting an open-heart surgery: Jochen Hummel's apt analogy for the current state of working with AI.
• Jochen's message to those still on the fence, hoping to sit this one out. Don't. We're in the experimental stage. We're all testing things. And we must do it now—waiting isn't an option. Otherwise, we lose time and gain no experience.
• So many progressive teams are already well advanced in finding #AI use cases. They're experimenting and doing things that were previously impossible or not cost-effective.
• Smart advice from Ira Rotzler at Porsche: AI is a great excuse to do something you've always wanted to do; now you've got the attention & resources. Like terminology cleanup or augmentation—because, well, LLMs do need high-quality data, right?!
• 2025 might be the year of AI agents. Think smarter workflows.
• AI is producing new types of errors—more on the knowledge level, less related to #language. These are harder to spot, requiring more specialist knowledge. This should be better-paid work than standard language work is today. (We just don't have a name for these specialists yet.)
• "AI+Human still dominate"—well said, João Graça! Plus, congrats on TowerLLM! Also, image credit here, a great quote.
• #LLM translation models will need 24+ months to reach NMT-like reliability and consistency (Kirti Vashee). Pretty much like at the beginning of this year. The race is (still) on.
A general observation: As LT Innovate focused on language technologies, the mood was certainly upbeat. Those involved feel they have a lot going for them, and that the future is bright.
The good news? It's still time to jump on this bandwagon—if not to build the engine itself, at least to hop aboard.
Thanks to all the organizers!
