Most college search guidance is about identifying a good-fit school that meets the student’s general criteria, such as location, size, and academic and social opportunities. These criteria are objective and concrete factors and independent of any given student. I’ve developed the concept of Deep-Fit™ through my decades of experience supporting college students. With Deep-Fit, choosing a school isn't about chasing prestige, US News and World Report rankings, or fit to expected obvious factors. These factors are important to consider, of course, but Deep-Fit is more than this. After all, two schools with similar size, location, and academic and social opportunities are not the same, and a student might have vastly different experiences at them. A Deep-Fit college is a good-fit college where a student will have the opportunity to have positive, impactful experiences, meet their specific academic and personal goals, thrive, and lay the foundation for a successful life—to create their future. Exciting news: NeurIPS, the world's largest AI conference, recently introduced its first-ever competition specifically for high school students. Participants were invited to submit papers showcasing how their machine learning projects could create “positive social impact.” The response was overwhelming, with so many submissions that the high school track turned out to be even more competitive than the main conference itself! For families navigating the college application process, this reflects a growing trend: high schoolers are engaging in increasingly ambitious academic and extracurricular pursuits. Students and their parents often think that a student should apply to as many highly selective schools as possible to achieve their best admissions outcomes. In practice, we see the opposite to be true. Why is this the case? Why does a probabilistic approach fall short in college admissions? My latest article addresses the flawed approach of applying to many prestigious colleges to increase your chance of acceptance (and what to do instead). If you have a high school student who is planning to apply to college and would benefit from personalized advising, please be in touch at jennifer@lanterncollege.com to learn how we may help.

So much good advice in this article! Rick Clark encourages students to re-think fit as places where they may not be comfortable but will be challenged, grow, and graduate as a very different person than they entered. I agree! In my roles on college campuses, I always tell my students that if they graduate much the same as when they entered, we have failed them. At Lantern College Counseling, we talk about a good fit as a school that meets a student’s general criteria, such as location, size, and academic and social opportunities. Of course, these factors are important to consider, but we push students to go beyond this type of fit. After all, two schools with similar sizes, locations, and academic and social opportunities are not the same, and a student might have vastly different experiences at them. We guide them to identify what we call Deep-Fit colleges - good fit colleges where they will have the opportunity to have positive, impactful experiences, meet their specific academic and personal goals, thrive, and lay the foundation for a successful life—to create their future. There are some interesting points in this piece - thank you! I agree that a strategic approach is key and with the emphasis on framing the experience as one of personal discovery and growth rather than outcomes. The article notes that this will lead to students identifying their strengths, passions, and values, which are the foundation of a successful college application process and college experience. Let's go further, though - this approach is also the foundation for post-college success. At Lantern College Counseling, our Deep-Fit college search and application process centers college thriving as a foundation for lifelong success. Learn more on our blog: https://lnkd.in/ehcJvw8z.
