    This holiday season, we’ve embraced the spirit of giving and creativity! Our team has been spreading cheer by writing cards for local nursing home residents, making gingerbread houses and donning our favorite ugly sweaters. We also brought the holiday spirit to life with a firm-wide decorating contest. Congratulations to the IT department for their winning design!

    On January 1st, the recently adopted changes to the rules governing the Virginia Retail Franchising Act will go into effect. These changes include the following four main revisions, which will impact franchise registrations in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the coming year:   1. Franchise registration, renewal and amendment applications must be submitted either electronically via an approved method, or on a CD-ROM in PDF format or other approved electronic media. 2. Opening balance sheets for start-up franchisors must be prepared in accordance with US GAAP. 3. In addition to escrow and fee deferral, franchisors may post a surety bond as a form of financial assurance. 4. If electing a fee deferral as a form of financial assurance, the franchisor will be required to submit a new Form L, titled “Certification of Deferred Franchise Fee - Franchise Registration/Renewal.”   Read more at the blog I wrote with my colleague Silas Petersen at the links in the comments of this post.
