Microbial researchers, check out this opportunity to learn how to harness the power of the Joint Genome Institute's IMG/M platform, an incredible resource for (meta)genome exploration, comparative genomics and gene discovery, as well as for viral ecogenomics. 🦠 🧬 💻
Are you an experimental biologist or budding computational biologist? Register by April 7 to join us for a five-day workshop on data and workflows for the JGI's Integrated Microbial Genomes and Microbiomes (IMG/M) web-based platform. IMG/M provides access to the wealth of public microbiome sequence data and enables users to analyze these data with existing bioinformatic methods — bridging the gap from sequence to biology. WHAT: MGM Workshop WHEN: 4/28–5/2 WHERE: The IGB at Berkeley Lab INFO: mgm.jgi.doe.gov The Society for Science at User Research Facilities Nikos Kyrpides Rekha S.

“This unexpected finding highlights a connection between plant and human biology, revealing how a compound known for its importance in the brain also has critical and complex functions in the soil ecosystem,” said Kateryna Zhalnina, a research scientist and co-first author on a recent study that found serotonin is a key compound in microbial communities. Serotonin is a signaling molecule commonly known for its role in mood regulation, The #BioEGSB research team also identified more compounds that shape the microbial communities dwelling around plant roots and soil, opening up the possibility for agricultural strategies that precisely and sustainably improve plant health and crop yields. We just celebrated the opening of the newest building on the Berkeley Lab campus–the Biological and Environmental Integration Center (BioEPIC)! We toasted this amazing step forward for #science with an Open House on January 23. What an honor it was to celebrate with so many individuals and teams who were essential to making this dream a reality: SmithGroup, Clark Construction Group, University of California Office of the President National Laboratories, and of course the scientists and engineers who will work in the building. Cheers to BioEPIC! Learn more: bioepic.lbl.gov Berkeley Lab Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA)
