Understand learning. Improve teaching. Build leadership.
About us
We are a professional learning organization that exists to put learning at the heart of teaching and leading so that educators can deliver on the promise of a quality education for all students. We encourage and celebrate educators and leaders who grow their ability to ask questions and nurture curiosity about their learners. We partner with schools, districts, and county offices to design and create vibrant learning cultures for educators so that they evolve as learners who address equity by leading systematic improvement that gives all students opportunities to learn, grow and thrive. Our work as mentors, coaches, program designers and facilitators leverages inquiry as a launching pad by using data to uncover and then address learners’ experiences, needs and potential.

Recently, Lead by Learning presented at the SEL Exchange Conference in Chicago, showcasing our signature practice, the “Focal Student Learning Partnership Conversation,” as a transformative tool that empowers educators to better understand students' learning and experiences. This approach promotes adult SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) among teachers, enabling them to be vulnerable and build empathetic connections with students, fostering a learning environment where teachers act as learners and students as partners. During the session, attendees had the opportunity to plan out their own partnership conversations, which proved to be deeply impactful. As one participant reflected, "This type of conversation is a window into the student's identity, sense of belonging, and their experience of learning, while also serving as a mirror into the teacher’s operating assumptions, biases, and feelings, offering a chance to investigate further." A heartfelt thank you to CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) for organizing such an insightful conference. We can’t wait to return in 2025 to continue these important conversations and further strengthen our practices! Oakland Teacher Sam Goetz partnered with Lead by Learning last school year to explore teaching language in her science classroom. Her inquiry was grounded in cycles of “data digs” with her district and site colleagues. ⛏️ Check out all her data and the ways in which she analyzed her student’s writing in science.📝 December is a perfect time to reflect back on all the amazing data collected so far this school year to check in on student progress and growth.📈 🌟 Read Sam’s Blog: https://hubs.ly/Q02P1H240 🌟 Download our free resource, Data Dig tool, to begin digging into your data like Sam did or guide your colleagues during collaboration: https://hubs.ly/Q02P1HkZ0 #datadig #studentvoice #streetdata #reflection #collaborative inquiry #freeresource #adultlearning #leadbylearning

How can we cultivate a culture of asking questions during professional development to encourage reflection and build confidence in one another's strengths, thus fostering a more engaging and supportive environment?🤔 Priscilla Parchia, Program Manager at the Oakland Unified School District’s Expanded Learning Office, embraced Supportive Challenge through her work with Lead by Learning. This approach empowers her communities of adult learners by transforming moments of asking questions a.k.a “squeaky wheels” into safe opportunities for growth.📈 According to Priscilla, Supportive Challenges help us to: ❤️ Push our practice forward and build community trust 💬 Enhance our ability to engage in courageous conversations aimed at addressing and changing oppressive practices and policies 👂Refine our listening skills to empower our colleagues Let’s move towards collective collaboration and growth together by integrating Supportive Challenge into PD! 👟 Step into Practice today by downloading our free resource on Supportive Challenge: https://hubs.ly/Q02P1FKv0 📖 Read Priscilla Parchia’s Blog on Celebrating Supportive Challenge: https://hubs.ly/Q02P1G0w0 #ProfessionalDevelopment #SupportiveChallenge #AdultLearning #EducationalLeadership #ReflectivePractice #CollaborativeLearning #CourageousConversations #EmpowerEducators

Third grade teacher, Jane Kopp, was instrumental in our Lead Program Facilitator Brooklyn Joseph's decision to become a teacher. Teacher Kopp was a force of nature with a true growth mindset and natural curiosity. She taught Brooklyn to ask questions, take risks, keep trying, and challenge herself. Brooklyn felt so empowered in Kopp’s classroom. 🌟 Lead by Learning empowers teachers to think critically about their teaching practices and take risks in service of their students. We tap into curiosity and help teachers see what they might not be able to see on their own. 🔍 This Giving Tuesday, join us in supporting teachers who are changing lives every day by creating transformative learning experiences! Your contribution helps create the conditions for educators to continue inspiring, challenging, and empowering the next generation of learners. 📚💡 Donate today: https://hubs.ly/Q02Z6rQ90 #GivingTuesday #InvestInTeachers #LeadByLearning #SupportEducators #MakeADifference #EducationMatters
