To close out 2024, the LeaderSpring team gathered in Oakland, CA -- to celebrate the work we've accomplished together. Over a shared lunch, we reflected on our work and honored our collective efforts. The event was made even more special with the presentation of an intentional and meaningful art piece by artist Dev Heyrana, which beautifully symbolizes the essence of our community and mission. Dev’s heartfelt note to the team: I am deeply honored to paint these pieces for you all, inspired by the incredible work you do. Being part of this is truly special, and I hope these reflect the care and dedication you bring to your community. Each piece begins with a white and cream base, crafted from hand-made acrylic paint infused with Siruma Kaolin Clay—a natural material from Siruma, Camarines Sur, in the Philippines. It took me two years to perfect this process, weaving my Philippine heritage into my abstract work. The light yellow you see in this piece consists of this Clay. I love that the last jar of this clay and paint mix will be going home with you. In 2023, I had the privilege of being chosen as one of the artists to paint SFGH's Mini Hearts for their 150th Anniversary. My daughters came home from school one day, with so much excitement about what they had learned, how California's Golden Poppies once blanketed Ohlone land. Their joy sparked my own research and reflection when sending in my proposal to SFGH. I have celebrated the poppies for 3 years now with SFGH Foundation. I am one of two Large Heart Artists of 2025 and it will be displayed at The Ferry Building from January through mid-February. The pieces you have in your hands are the inspiration that led me to the large heart. These native flowers have a circadian rhythm driven by a nyctinastic behavior—they open and close in response to light and temperature. My favorite bit I learned is that scientists still don’t fully understand when certain plants developed this ability, but they believe flowers learned to do this to protect their pollen, allowing the outer petals to grow and shelter the inner core. This idea—the balance between growth and protection—resonates deeply with me. When I think about poppies, I see a reflection of the people in my life who inspire me: fierce, delicate, protective, growing, thriving, and always learning. They are a reminder of resilience and beauty, blooming against all odds. Through these pieces, I hope to share this spirit with you, blending the warmth of heritage, the inspiration of nature, and the power of connection. Thank you for allowing me to be part of something so meaningful. -- Thank you, Dev, for this beautiful gift. As we look ahead to 2025, we're filled with anticipation for what the year will bring and how we can continue to show up for both our communities and the incredible team that drives our mission forward. Together, we'll embrace the challenges and opportunities that come our way with a deep commitment to our purpose.
