About us

At Learner-Centered Collaborative, we envision education ecosystems that empower all learners to know who they are, thrive in community, and actively engage in the world as their best selves. Learner-Centered Collaborative is an educator-run organization built on decades of experiencing first-hand what works, what’s challenging, and what’s possible in education. Guided by the enduring truth that a learner-centered approach is the foundation for a successful, thriving learning community, Learner-Centered Collaborative partners with educators, schools, districts, and states to define whole-learner outcomes, design meaningful learning experiences, and create the enabling conditions for success on their unique journey to inclusive and equitable learner-centered education.

  • When engaging in transformational work like learner-centered education, we must build evidence that these practices positively impact learning for students and adults, alike. In 2024, we engaged in three major research and development initiatives to begin building this evidence, so learning communities everywhere can confidently make the shift to learner-centered practices. During the summer, we launched our Competency-Based Reporting Playbook, which can be found on our Tools page on our website! Throughout the 23/24 academic year, we partnered with University of California - San Diego researchers to identify and explore critical questions about learner success, well-being, empowerment, and agency. Now in our second year of work, this group is collaborating under the name SoCal LiNK! Last but not least, we have partnered with Digital Promise for the 24/25 academic year to design alumni surveys with a number of school districts across the country. In this work, we are aiming to develop question sets districts can use with their graduates to further advance their learner-centered visions. • Five innovative microschools across California—spanning Lamont Elementary School District, Escondido Union School District, and San Diego Unified School District—are partnering with Learner-Centered Collaborative and Getting Smart's Learning Innovation Fund. The initiative launched in early 2024 with two pilot sites and is expanding through 2025, with each location following a carefully planned rollout schedule. • Over the course of a year, Learner-Centered Collaborative worked with the Innovative School of Temple Beth Sholom to expand their vision and codify their learner-centered approach. Some of the highlights from our work together include: ✈️ School Visit — An LCC partner met and empathized with educators, learners, parents, and staff, sharing findings on bright spots, opportunities, surprises, and wonders. 🗺️ Guiding Coalition — A diverse group of stakeholders throughout the learning community came together to deepen their understanding of the current educational landscape and the shifts required for a learner-centered system. 🎓 Profile of a Learner (pictured) — The Innovative School team aligned their vision, mission, and values, drafted a Profile of a Learner and learning progressions, focusing on essential knowledge, skills, and dispositions for their learners’ success. 👩🏫 Learning Model — Together, we established clearly defined expectations of teaching and learning to support professional learning, evaluation, curriculum, and resource allocation. 🎯 Strategic Plan — Lastly, we outlined the strategic priorities for operationalizing the vision, mission, values, Profile of a Learner, and Learning Model. Part of this plan is defining a series of Big Moves that are the actions the system will take to reach the long-term vision. • "Anyone who works with schools knows that students thrive on meaningful problem-solving that enables them to apply their knowledge and skills at deeper levels. When they are empowered to take ownership of initiatives, the results are twofold: students develop greater buy-in and pride in their work, and the entire system benefits from their creativity and fresh perspectives. In National School District, students exemplify this dynamic through their engagement with a Profile of a Learner, which outlines key outcomes for developing exceptionally prepared learners; innovative and compassionate world citizens. Students participate in initiatives that nurture leadership, creativity, and a sense of responsibility to their schools and the world." Learn more about how National School District is bringing their Profile of a Learner to life in our latest blog post from Dr. Leighangela Brady: https://hubs.ly/Q030z19c0
