Big news today... after more than a decade of advocacy from groups like NAMI, the Biden-Harris administration finalized rules to strengthen the bipartisan Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), which was passed in 2008. These rules aim to increase access to mental health care and lower costs for families by ensuring that insurance companies provide adequate mental health coverage. President Biden said, “Mental health care is health care. But for far too many Americans, critical care and treatments are out of reach. Today, my Administration is taking action to address our nation’s mental health crisis by ensuring mental health coverage will be covered at the same level as other health care for Americans. There is no reason that breaking your arm should be treated differently than having a mental health condition. The steps my Administration is taking today will dramatically expand access to mental health care in America.” Vice President Kamala Harris called the rules "historic" and said "President Biden and I are committed to ensuring that every person in our country has the mental health care they need to thrive. That is why we made the largest investment in youth mental health in history and are transforming how mental health is understood, perceived, and treated for all Americans. Today, we are building on this lifesaving and lifechanging work by announcing the finalization of a historic rule that will expand mental health care across our nation so more of our loved ones, neighbors, coworkers, and classmates receive the care they deserve." It's that time of the year 📚✏️ The new school year is here again which means so is that back-to-school anxiety. The start of school can be a stressful time for the whole family as everyone adjusts to new expectations and routines. Our clinical team shared their top tips for how ease the transition back to school and set the foundation for a less stressful school year. 💬 Normalize and Validate Anxious Feelings Discuss how new beginnings can be challenging for everyone and that it's okay to feel nervous! Ask questions, give hugs, and encourage open conversations about their specific worries but avoid trying to convince them that there’s no reason to be anxious—it might make them less likely to open up in the future. 🗓️ Build in Time to Relax and Recharge Reserve 1-2 afternoons or evenings each week for downtime at home or with friends. For younger kids, keep a calendar somewhere they can easily see it with all activities or special events for the week and review the plan each morning. For older kids, check in regularly to make sure their schedule feels balanced and manageable. 🌳 Get Outside Studies show that physical activity and time spent in nature reduces stress and can even combat depression and anxiety. Walking or biking to school is a great way to calm nerves (and a fun way to start the day). If that’s not an option, build in other time outside by stopping at the park on the way home, taking a quick walk after dinner, or just having a catch in the backyard. 💟 Seek Support If the anxiety and stress doesn't get significantly better after the first few weeks of school, consider seeking outside support. Leiya offers groups for kids and parents struggling with anxiety, ADHD and other issues that can make school more stressful. 🌟 May 9th is Children's Mental Health Awareness Day 🌟 Every year, 1 in 6 youths face a mental health condition, yet too many struggle to find the help they need. 📣 Just yesterday, on May 8th, 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), via the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), announced an additional $46.8 million in funding opportunities to support mental health is now available as part of Biden’s Unity Agenda and in honor of May Mental Health Awareness Month. This funding will be aimed at enhancing youth mental health, expanding the number of mental health care providers, increasing access to care nationwide and strengthening recovery support services. ✨ This a step in the right direction, but we still have a long way to go to fundamentally chance the way we support children and families. Increasing funding and access is important, but we also need to rethink outdated care models and embrace ground-breaking new ones. 🌱 We created Leiya because, as clinicians, we saw these issues firsthand and knew that there had to be a better way. Leiya provides care that is more efficient and effective than traditional models by bringing clinicians with different specialties all under one roof to design multidisciplinary care pathways tailored for each individual family. We also partner with schools so that we can reach kids where they already are. We’re proud to be part of the solution to bridge the gap in mental health services and ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive. Join us this Mental Health Awareness Month in spreading awareness and creating real change. 💚 Thanks to the following sources for these statistics: ✴ NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) ✴ JAMA Pediatrics ✴ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ✴ National Juvenile Justice Network (NJJN) ✴ The White House ✴ Clarify Health Solutions ✴ Archives of General Psychiatry ✴ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS ✴ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
