🔶 #DAY2 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 [𝗞𝗘𝗬𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗘 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵] - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘂𝗺-𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸, 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 Shirley Wang, 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 Shanghai Metals Market. 💡 𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 & 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: ◾ From the development trend of high-nickel and medium-nickel NCM cathodes, it will 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲. It's known that NCM cathode materials containing over 65% nickel mainly use lithium hydroxide. Otherwise, lithium carbonate will mainly be used. ◾ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗹 𝗡𝗖𝗠 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀: 1) high-energy density, 2) the cost of cobalt is considerably more than nickel. However, the safety for high-nickel NCM materials is relatively weaker. ◾ 𝗖𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮. Moreover, SMM suggests that, despite short-term disruptions in raw material delivery and decreases production due to loss, the long-term trend still indicates pressure on Nickel and Cobalt prices. ◾ Energy density of high-voltage 6-series products currently near to standard 8-series products. Also, mid-nickel cathodes are safer and stable, which will reduce the competitive advantage for high-nickel cathodes. ◾ SMM predicts that from 2024 to 2027, 𝗺𝗶𝗱-𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗹 𝗡𝗖𝗠 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗖𝗔𝗚𝗥 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟬% 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟰% 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆. It's noticeable that the growth rate of high nickel is decelerating. Thus, as the high-nickel process slows down, it will further strengthen the dominance of lithium carbonate. 🛎 Shanghai Metals Market is a leading consulting and research firm dedicated to providing the kind of insight and knowledge that helps companies find a clear path to success. We truly appreciate Battery Associates active participation towards the conference and it's enlightening to hear so many interesting opinions from Simon. Appreciate your assistance and hope you enjoy the conference too.
Last week, the Battery Associates team travelled to the US West Coast for a packed trip of events, client visits, podcasts, and community connections! Li-ION BATTERY AMERICAS 2024 in Las Vegas, USA provided a dynamic platform integrating stakeholders across the entire battery value chain. We connected with stakeholders from around the world and had the opportunity to record insightful podcasts. Dr. Simon Engelke moderated two panels, “Innovative Cutting-edge Technology to Improve the Energy Density of Lithium Battery,” featuring panellists Ronnie Tao, Ernst van Nierop, Shirley Wang, and Nicholas Grundish; and “Charting the Path for the Growth of North America's Battery Industry by 2030,” featuring panellists Shailesh Upreti, Nitin Tyagi, David Anonychuk, and Phoebe Yang. A huge thank you to Shanghai Metals Market and Katherina Dong and her team for putting together this great event. It was exciting to see first hand the exciting developments in the battery industry in the US and visit companies in Nevada and California. One of the companies we visited was Cuberg. It was great to see their new expanded facilities, growing team, and to record a podcast (keep an eye out on this feed for the release!). You can also listen to one of our earlier podcasts with them on the Battery Insiders podcast. We were also thrilled to organise a Battery Associates' Ambassador and BatteryMBA alumni meetup in San Francisco. We look forward to many more industry events to come this year and the opportunity to connect soon with our community at upcoming meetups in London and Stuttgart! #event #batteries #personaldevelopment

However, if power and sensitivity are more important, micro-batteries will be key. ◾ Ronnie Tao, VP of Amprius Technologies, Inc. thanked for the insights and pointed out that silicon has been widely used in the market, replacing 85% of graphite. He mentioned that silicon is a partial replacement for graphite, which is good news. He also talked about the progress of collaboration with Mercedes and other automakers. ◾ Thicker cathodes might not result in an optimal percentage increase in volumetric energy density when considering energy density. ◾ Ernst van Nierop, Director of Sila Nanotechnologies, Inc. stated that their company has been working towards commercial applications of this technology. Their team has developed a silicon-based battery structure that can control small carrier systems. They have also conducted various tests to ensure the safety performance of the battery. ◽ Stay tune for more upcoming agendas on DAY2 Main Forum! 🌟 Our 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶-𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 will be held in Brussels, October 8-10.
