The November issue of Inside Biomanufacturing is out! In last month’s issue, we discussed the various challenges in the scale-up of #biotechnology processes. Recognizing that few, if any, biotech startups have unlimited funds to do everything perfectly, we decided to share a few “hacks”.
About us
Liberation Labs was formed to address the growing fermentation capacity gap in cellular agriculture by providing the industry with the infrastructure to commercialize novel protein manufacturing at the scale and cost structure required by the market. Specifically, Liberation Labs is developing a global network of fit-for-purpose precision fermentation facilities located in the geographies that will drive market access for novel protein companies to commercially succeed, enabling them to achieve price parity with animal proteins. Founded by industry leaders with decades of experience in deployment of precision fermentation facilities and commercial expertise in fermentation market dynamics, our vision is to enable the technology that frees the world from the costs of industrialized agriculture.

Our co-founder and CEO Mark Warner will be speaking next week at the Alternative Fuels & Chemicals Coalition's annual summit. He's part of a blue-chip panel of experts who will talk about #bioprocess services from basic R&D, scale-up, piloting and through to commercial #manufacturing. Discussion will focus on how a robust process development and scale-up infrastructure can accelerate opportunities for #biobased products. Mark is joined by Chris Guske, Beth Conerty, David Demirjian, Kelsey Weimer, Michael Tai, PhD, and David Weiner. If you're at the event, swing by Track 3, Session 4 (3:30-5:00, Thursday, November 21).

The latest issue of Inside Biomanufacturing is out! We discuss the two questions that often emerge from considering how to commercialize industrial biotechnology: what makes scale-up of industrial biotechnology so difficult and how can risk be reduced in the process? This article will expand on the concepts to address these questions, while Part 2 (next month) will provide a few “hacks.”

The latest issue of Inside Biomanufacturing is live! In this issue, we tackle the importance of ensuring that your precision #fermentation facility runs reliably long enough to maximize your plant’s OEE (overall equipment effectiveness). Implementing a robust M&R (maintenance and reliability) roadmap along with establishing a culture of plant ownership is critical to achieve this. There are many programs to build this roadmap from, such as TPM (Total Productive Maintenance), Reliability Centered Maintenance and others. Regardless of the program you chose, the typical first steps are to identify your assets and determine their asset criticality ranking (ACR). In this issue, our own Derik Ward walks you through how we identified ACR for the #biomanufacturing equipment at the Liberation Labs plant in Richmond, Indiana. Perhaps it can be helpful to you.

Next week in Indianapolis, our co-founder and CEO Mark Warner will take the stage at Rally 2024 -- the largest global cross-sector innovation conference. He's speaking about how BioTransformations have the potential to unlock life-changing solutions in health, climate change, energy, food security, agriculture, supply chain resilience and more while also growing the American economy. Other panelists include Genya Dana of BioMADE and Jennifer Walker of Primient, with Aaron Schacht of BiomEdit moderating. Bonus: after the panel, Mark will be signing copies of his book: “Industrial Biotechnology Commercialization Handbook: How to make proteins without animals and chemicals without crude oil”.

The August Issue of Inside #Biomanufacturing is live! In this issue we liken the choice to retrofit an old plant (for cost reasons) to the choice of a flip phone vs a smartphone. Whether it was a flip phone, Blackberry or any other non-smartphone, think back to when you made the switch; did you make the decision based on which one was “capital light”, or was it based on an evaluation of the differences and the decision that the smart phone was materially better in performance and thus worth the additional expense? When you dig into the increased operating expense and weigh it against the incremental #capital, you will quickly find that “the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.”
Would you still buy a flip phone?

Incredible to see our 600,000 liter precision #fermentation facility taking shape! When operational, this will bring much needed domestic #biomanufacturing capacity for many different kinds of products. We're focused on partnering with #biotechnology visionaries to commercialize the #bioproducts of the future - foods, materials, and yet to be discovered breakthroughs that will make all of our lives better. And it will happen in Richmond, Indiana.

The July Issue of Inside Biomanufacturing is live! In it we share our lessons learned (and a handy checklist!) in the complex and sometimes daunting process of choosing a site for a biomanufacturing facility. The search involves many factors including cost structure, available incentives and regulatory considerations. Being realistic and pragmatic in what is required is one of the hardest parts of site selection, as it requires both a holistic view of the overall business and project, and the need to winnow down a long list of “wants” to only “must-have” items. Our experience with many site developments confirms that if you are not willing to make tough decisions, you will end up with an “all of the above” plan, which results in a long and often fruitless site selection process. This issue helps you plan and execute an effective site selection process. #biomanufacturing #proteins #manufacturing
