Update on SEADETECT System Installation 🚢 🌊 We're pleased to announce the successful installation of the 3D-LIDAR system on the Découverte du Vivant vessel by ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab. The initial setup included the 3D-LIDAR and a context camera for verification of the detections. These sensors were installed on the front of the vessel to detect whales. 🐋 Check out our video showcasing the installation and initial sea trials. You can see the 3D point cloud representation of the approaching whale obtained by the 3D-LIDAR in comparison with the images captured by the camera. 🎥 The data collected will be used to improve our whales detection algorithms. The initial setup included the panoramic camera and the eVPU computer, which have already undergone a first navigation to validate system functionality and user ergonomics. The data collected will be used to train our AI-based cetacean detection algorithms. 🌊 Introducing our latest scientific paper: "SEADETECT: developing an automated detection system to reduce whale-vessel collision risk." This paper sheds light on our commitment to addressing the urgent issue of whale-vessel collisions in the Mediterranean Sea and beyond. With ship strikes posing a significant threat to cetaceans worldwide, our SEADETECT initiative is working on innovative solutions to mitigate collision risks. 🌊🐋 February 18th marks World Whale Day, prompting us to reflect on the profound significance of these majestic creatures in our oceans. 🌍💙 Despite their imposing presence, whales face numerous threats, including the constant threat of ship strikes. 🚢🐳 These collisions pose significant risks to both whales and maritime safety, emphasizing the urgent need for action. In response, our project, LIFE SeaDetect, stands as a beacon of hope in marine conservation efforts. 🛰️🌊 Our goal? 🌐 Introducing ONERA as a valued member of the SEADETECT project. 🚢 ONERA is at the forefront of developing a LiDAR 3D system with the capability to detect cetaceans. During the project, we will be conducting tests on a COTS-based 3D-LiDAR prototype. This prototype offers a wide field of view of 120° and an operational range of up to 500 m. 🚢 Ship Visit Update 🌐  On July, 2023, Sirehna orchestrated and hosted a survey aboard the vessel "Piana" of La Méridionale in Marseille, a pivotal step within the collaborative European project SEADETECT. Accompanied by partners, including Nexvision, Diades Marine, and ONERA, SIREHNA's team conducted an insightful survey. 🤝 The Piana stands as the first vessel equipped for cetacean and OFNI (Object Floating in the Sea) detection and avoidance that will undergo testing starting in the summer of 2024.
