Today we present a new paper from the winners of our 2022 Robert G. Edwards prize, that advances their research into the uses of federated learning-based AI tools in clinical IVF practice. This paper from Dr Jonathan Hall, Sonya Diakiw and team at Life Whisperer Diagnostics, presents the results from their latest work developing an artificial intelligence for predicting usable blastocyst formation from pre-ICSI oocyte images. Their results demonstrate the possibility to develop a computer vision AI model with the ability to assess MII oocyte morphology prior to ICSI to evaluate oocyte competence, as defined by formation of a usable blastocyst. The oocytes AI requires no manual annotation or calculation by the embryologist, thereby removing any subjectivity that may arise due to variability in embryologist grading. A standardized, automated tool for evaluation of oocyte competence represents a significant advancement in the field, given the somewhat contradictory results of published studies evaluating morphological features of oocyte quality.
