#LightIron Los Angeles #colorist Pat Fitzgerald shares his experience #colorgrading for #Netflix Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter, shot by #cinematographers John Benam, Arlene Nelson ASC, and Dominique Hessert Owens. "This is my third project working with [director] Ryan [White], [producer] Jessica [Hargrave] and the filmmakers wanted a variety of looks that reflected the different time periods of the recreations and to differentiate them from the modern verite footage. We created different looks representing the '70s, '80s, and early 2000s that lean into different color palettes of movies of those time periods. For the modern interviews they wanted a clean, straightforward look and were focused on separating and balancing between shots to keep a consistent flow. The recreations utilize film emulations and grain to help create the different looks."

#LightIron Los Angeles supervising colorist Ian Vertovec discusses his collaboration #colorgrading #TheOldMan. "For Episodes 1-4 of @theoldmanfx S2, DP Jules O'Loughlin ASC ACS and EP Dan Shotz wanted to do something original with the look of the scenes set in Afghanistan. The scenes were a bit complex, as they were shot in Southern California for Afghanistan and the time of year during which they shot the scenes the grass and trees were far too green for the area of Afghanistan they wanted to match. We also wanted to match the season 1 look, but also reinvent it a bit. We also didn't want it to look too generically effected, like a yellow filter look. Fortunately, the new version of #filmlight_'s #Baselight had some new tools with the version 6 update, and with Chromogen I was able to craft a naturalistic, warm look that matched the season 1 look, but also preserved more of the natural dynamic range captured in the day exteriors and the night campfire scenes. The new x-grade tool was exactly what we needed to twist the green grass and trees to the dryer, darker greens we were looking for. The end result is a strong, natural look with lots of complex warm tones throughout the skintones and surrounding environment."

"Working on Christmas movies is really fun. There’s a warmth and comfort in working on things that people are so familiar with, yet there’s also a lot of room to have fun with the magic of it all.”

A movie like this comes once in a millennium. 🔌 In our excitement for the new apocalyptic comedy Y2K, we went behind the scenes with cinematographer Bill Pope, ASC on his collaboration with Light Iron and Panavision for this project. “I knew director Kyle Mooney from working with him on Zoolander 2 (I helped out on the principal photography after the DoP of record had to leave), and from Seinfeld’s Unfrosted. He just struck me as an incredibly committed and hilariously surprising comic actor. We connected and talked on the films and I just stored that away in my wee mind. When he and Evan Winter were looking for a DP, somehow my name came up. The VA Primes have a great light distortion which felt period to us. Softer toward the edges, they felt filmish. Light Iron works closely with Panavision and spoke to us very early about being our post solution. We started working on a LUT as we were checking out gear. I approached collaborating with Senior Colorist Charles Bunnag how everyone would: references, feel, discussion. It’s like being at a wine tasting, but without the wine. Wah! Certainly our touchstone was Dazed and Confused. Not just the content of the film, but the way Richard Linklater and Lee Daniels blocked out scenes with multiple actors coming from multiple directions was thrilling in its seemingly casual blocking, that on closer viewing is not so easily done. And we wanted Y2K to feel like it was shot on film, with grain rolling around, and the color space of that film. There were others, like Breaking Away which had great biking scenes and a laid back approach. We wanted a feeling of lightness and an invisible camera for the first part of the film. So we also studied Superbad. Kyle and Evan are also enamored of more mannered films, like Evil Dead, so those also came into play in the second half of the film, after midnight on Y2K.”
