I’m excited to share the inspiring story of Horacio Martinez— a true example of perseverance and the incredible impact of support and training. In 2014, Horacio lost his vision, but he never lost his drive to succeed. With the help of our team at Lighthouse of Broward, Horacio learned valuable skills in adaptive living and assistive technology that helped him regain his independence. His journey took him to We Take the Cake, a local bakery, where he participated in a work experience program. After which, Horacio was offered part-time employment, packaging and preparing cakes for retailers like BJ’s and Costco. His positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to grow have made him a valuable team member—and a perfect example of how persistence can pay off. If you’re a business owner or know someone hiring, we’d love to connect and have you be part of our Work Experience Program. Together, we can help more individuals like Horacio thrive in the workforce. As we close out National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we’re highlighting a reality that serves as a motivation for our work every day at Lighthouse of Broward: 70% of people in the blind and visually impaired community are unemployed. That’s a staggering number, but it’s one we’re determined to change. Through our Job Readiness Training program, we equip clients with the skills and confidence to compete for fulfilling jobs. They learn how to: Create impactful resumes and cover letters Master in-person and online interviews Navigate disability disclosure and accommodations Our graduates also join a Job Networking Group, where they receive continuous support, industry insights, and invaluable connections. We see firsthand how people with disabilities bring innovation, resilience, and unique perspectives to the workforce. Let’s continue to advocate for inclusion all year round by recognizing the immense value that employees of all abilities bring to our teams. Also happy Halloween everyone! 🎃 #NDEAM #InclusiveHiring #LighthouseofBroward #DisabilityEmployment #JobReadiness #DisabilityInclusion #Advocacy
