In honor of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, I feel called to honor my clients and the many neurodivergent folks out there working so hard to make their mark on the world. This includes: - The brilliant software engineer who is "done with tech" due to lay-offs and burnout, and is now pursuing his true passion in writing, - The nurse who puts her patients first and shows up to work everyday despite constant sensory overload, - The civil engineering student who experiences selective mutism due to stress but is self-advocating for her needs and will be graduating this spring, - The college professor who experienced catatonia due to a mental health breakdown and is now rebuilding her life, - The unemployed and frustrated cybersecurity student who is tremendously talented but who has not yet found a job. To all of you, I am in awe of your strength and resilience and I salute you. Thanks Prof. Amanda Kirby for highlighting scaffolding. This is an essential principle to Occupational therapy in supporting clients. I would also add that the same principle should be applied when supporting employers with neuroinclusive design. Start where they are, set metrics, and build at a pace that supports retention of information learned and translation to practice! #neurodiversityatwork #neurodiversity
