A new Nature Portfolio study reveals that approximately 42% of individuals may develop dementia after age 55, with lifetime risks higher for Black individuals, women, and those with certain genetic markers. The findings underscore the need for targeted public health strategies focused on prevention—particularly through cardiovascular health and hearing preservation—as well as the importance of early detection, which plays a crucial role in managing and mitigating dementia risks. With dementia cases expected to double by 2060, public health policies must prioritize lifestyle interventions and address structural inequalities that contribute to higher risks in minority populations. https://lnkd.in/g73FyTmV I #AlzheimersDisease #Dementia #BrainHealth #Prevention #DementiaResearch #HealthEquity

Is it possible for family caregivers to clearly communicate with a loved one with dementia? While communication strategies vary by disease stage and other factors, Linus Health Chief Strategy Officer Dr. John Showalter and other brain health experts shared their insights with AARP on how to effectively converse with loved ones with dementia: “Meeting a person with dementia ‘in their world’ is acceptable to have a positive interaction as long as everyone is safe. If the hallucinations lead to aggression … get assistance from family, staff in a facility, or even paramedics. Do not argue about the reality of a hallucination with a loved one if it makes them more agitated.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gn9yi3uX #Dementia #AlzheimersDisease #BrainHealth #MildCognitiveImpairment

We recently announced the release of a new report from Together Senior Health (Together), a Linus Health company. Published by Milliman, the report evaluates the accuracy of Together’s Risk of Alzheimer’s and Dementia Algorithm (RADAR) family of models using claims-based data. The validated RADAR algorithm identifies and stratifies patients at elevated risk for undiagnosed Alzheimer’s, dementia, and cognitive decline using EHR and claims data. RADAR provides payers and providers with an efficient and accurate tool to carefully triage which patients should first receive more in-depth cognitive impairment screenings, so those with higher risk can begin receiving preventative interventions as soon as possible. Advancements in AI, smart technology, and innovative care models are set to drive equitable healthcare in 2025 by improving access, reducing disparities, and enhancing patient outcomes for underserved populations. Ultimately, these technologies will improve the detection and treatment of mild cognitive impairment. Ali Jannati, MD, PhD, director of cognitive science at Linus Health shares more with First Report Managed Care: "Research on Alzheimer disease and related dementias reveals that these conditions disproportionately impact racial and ethnic minorities, further exacerbating existing socioeconomic inequities and contributing to poorer health outcomes. Early identification of cognitive impairment is crucial, yet traditional assessments often fail to capture the full scope of brain health needs in these vulnerable populations. This underscores the importance of advancing care strategies. I anticipate a growing adoption of AI-powered digital screening tools among health care organizations serving diverse communities." https://lnkd.in/eG_Tt6xY I #Dementia #HealthEquity #AlzheimersDisease #BrainHealth #ArtificialIntelligence

Watching a loved one experience sudden cognitive decline can be startling and overwhelming, especially when symptoms like confusion, memory loss, and/or balance issues appear rapidly. Although rapidly progressing dementia is uncommon, Linus Health Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer Alvaro Pascual-Leone says if you or a loved one show symptoms, see a medical provider as soon as possible. Compared with typical dementia, in rapidly progressive dementia: ▶️ The start of symptoms leads to a faster official dementia diagnosis. ▶️ There is a quicker timeline between symptom onset to death. ▶️ There are more rapidly decreasing scores in cognitive testing, such as the mini-mental state examination, a common dementia evaluation tool. Newly published evidence adds to the growing body of literature demonstrating significant gaps in cognitive care across the U.S. and troubling indicators of continued care inequities. A study published this month in the JGIM Journal of General Internal Medicine found that 81% of participants with probable dementia were unaware of their dementia diagnosis. Even more troubling, there appears to be a health equity gap: Among different cohorts studied, 85% of Mexican-Americans were unaware of such a diagnosis compared to only 68% of non-Hispanic white participants. Of note, only 6.6% of participants had no primary care provider, indicating that unawareness of a dementia diagnosis was not due to lack of access to primary care. https://lnkd.in/gwfgFTnU | #Dementia #MildCognitiveImpairment #BrainHealth #CognitiveHealthScreening #DementiaPrevention
