I recently attended an incredibly engaging event at Belvedere House & Gardens in Mullingar on the 24th of August 2024, where a series of illustrated talks were held. The discussions focused on the fascinating history of Belvedere, its notable owners, including Colonel Charles Howard-Bury, and the significant connection between Westmeath and global mountaineering history, especially the early expeditions to Mount Everest. The panel of speakers was exceptional, including Ruth Illingworth, historian and great story-teller, Ian Kenneally (Historian, Author and Broadcaster), Frank Nugent (mountaineer-explorer, author), Marc McMenamin (author and award-winning documentary-maker), diving deep into the rich history of Belvedere House and the remarkable life of Col. Howard-Bury, a man whose adventures and leadership played a key role in the early explorations of Mount Everest. The event provided a unique glimpse into the past, and the illustrated talks, maps, slides, photographs and discussions brought to life the stories of these historical figures and their daring expeditions. What made the day particularly special for me was the personal connection I felt, having had the privilege of typing up Col. Howard-Bury’s original diaries many years ago. This event meant I spent some of the remainder of the weekend immersed in video clips and documentaries on Everest expeditions. Well worth looking up. If you ever get the chance to attend a similar event at Belvedere House & Gardens, I highly recommend it. It was a day well spent, learning about the intertwining histories of Westmeath and some of the world’s greatest mountain adventures.

Today, I'm diving into my role as an External Authenticator (EA) remotely, and I must say—I'm thoroughly enjoying it! As an EA, my mission is to ensure the quality and integrity of assessments offered by QQI providers. By reviewing samples of learner work and verifying that assessment processes are fair, transparent, and aligned with national standards, we help maintain the credibility and value of QQI qualifications. Remote work has its perks—whether it's enjoying a cup of coffee in a cosy corner or the flexibility to connect with institutions across the country from the comfort of home or, in our case, our studio. But what's most fulfilling is knowing that, even from a distance, I'm contributing to the high standards of education that learners deserve.
