Even when it’s empty, case carts can be hard to maneuver, but when it’s fully loaded with instrumentation that you need to push all the way through the hospital, it’s rough – especially if one of the casters is damaged. So how can you avoid these issues? Where do you even begin? There are three buckets to consider when it comes to case cart casters: 1. How far is the case cart traveling? Using four swivel casters when pushing a full case cart through a facility is a nightmare. While it moves easily, steering is difficult which can lead to a damaged wall or worse. Having at least one rigid or directional lock caster will give you more control and an anchor point to pivot around. 2. How much weight does the case cart need to hold? Case carts are heavy on their own. Adding 6-8 trays to them makes them harder to move and steer which could lead to a workman comp claim. Larger casters with two swivels and two rigid or directional lock casters will allow for more control while making it easier to cross thresholds. 3. Case cart caster maintenance. First, understand the dimensions of your case cart washer. If the fit is too tight, your casters could show wear and damage over time. Greasing your casters every six months and clearing any debris like string or hair wrapped around the casters, can also help keep your casters in good shape.
